“Behold, the virgin shall be with child and shall bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which translated means, ‘God with us.’” (Matthew 1:23, NASB)

Hi, this is Eleanor Witcher of IMB’s prayer office, giving thanks for the birth of Jesus.

Although Christians in the United States are intentional about keeping the “Christ in Christmas,” our American Christmas Day celebrations are usually not held in a church building. With no trees to trim, turkeys to baste, or gifts to exchange, Lozi Christians of Zambia usually celebrate Christmas at the church as a church. “What could be better?” you ask. Distractions abound even in western Zambia. Sometimes these celebrations turn into an excuse to spend the whole year’s tithe money on a big traditional feast. As in the U.S., when too much time and money is focused on food and the “event,” sometimes we forget who we are really celebrating.

A believer in Karachi, Pakistan shares: Recently, “I met a young Muslim woman. As we were talking, she mentioned that her Christian friend had invited her to a Christmas party last year and she had had such a great time. I thought to myself, ‘That’s good; at least she knows a Christian.’ When I asked if her friend had told her the meaning of Christmas, the young woman said, ‘I really wanted to know, but when I asked my friend, she said she wasn’t sure’. This is actually quite common in this country, as many who identify themselves as ‘Christian’ do so only because of the family they were born into, and it’s mostly just a cultural identification for them.

* Please pray that cultural Christians, wherever they live, will hear the true meaning of Christmas with understanding and accept the Good News of salvation in Christ.

* Ask God to pierce the hearts of His followers, whether in the U.S. or across the globe, to faithfully focus our celebrations on the birth of the Savior.

* Bow in gratitude for the birth of the One who is called Immanuel, God with us—declare the Good News to your neighbors. Merry Christmas!

*** Our offices will be closed December 23 through January 1 to allow staff members to celebrate the birth of Jesus. The next PrayerLine will be distributed Friday, January 3. Thank you for your understanding. Merry CHRISTmas!***

“And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19, HCSB)

Hi, this is Eleanor Witcher of IMB’s prayer office, asking you to pray for churches and individuals as they support international missions.

The South Africa Tswana Team writes: “We praise God for all of you who so faithfully pray and give. Your prayers give us hope beyond measure. Your giving allows us to be among our people group and to serve the Lord freely. Thank you for giving to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering (LMCO) and to the Cooperative Program.”

Workers among the Coastal Swahili peoples of East Africa, in simple honesty, share, “The truth is . . . life on the field isn’t as glamorous as one might imagine when first stepping off the plane. We aren’t camped under a mango tree every day, bringing the Gospel to masses who’ve never heard it before, or distributing food to starving people on a daily basis. There are plenty of mountaintop experiences like that when we just look at each other in awe because we get to do this for a living, but the truth is . . . life happens, and ministry sometimes takes a backseat when it does. On our way to the capital city to collect a volunteer team one month, the engine of our SUV exploded. Lottie Moon Christmas Offering dollars rebuilt our engine and provided a loaner car in the meantime. Sometimes we find ourselves scooping rainwater off the kitchen floor. Our recently renovated roof cracked in two during a rainstorm one night, flooding our house. LMCO dollars paid for our rent and for the necessary repairs. The truth is . . . we need you and ask you to pray that people will give sacrificially this year so we can stay on the field, doing what we came to do--glamorous or not.”

* Please pray that Southern Baptists will be generous in their giving and that we will be faithful in using those funds to bring God glory.

* Intercede for the Coastal Swahili and Tswana peoples that they will hear and receive the Gospel.

* Give praise for the birth of the Savior, for He is the focus of our work and the reason for our joy.

CompassionNet's Today's Prayer

Prayer requests on the website are updated every Monday-Friday at 9:30 a.m., EST

December 20, 2013

A NOTE FROM THE PRAYER OFFICE: IMB will be closed on December 23 - January 1, so “Today’s Prayer” will not be available on those days. Thank you.

"Suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying: Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace on earth to people He favors!" (Luke 2:13-14, HCSB)

WORLD LEADER - “Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence” (1 Timothy 2:1-2). Please pray today for President Jalal Talabani of Iraq (southwestern Asia, between Syria and Iran).

EUROPEAN PEOPLES - “Joyeux Noel!” French children put their shoes in front of the fireplace, in the hopes that “Pere Noel” will fill them with gifts. Candy, fruit, nuts, and small toys will also be hung overnight on the tree. Although fewer and fewer French attend la Messe de Minuit (Midnight Mass) on Christmas Eve, it is still an important part of Christmas for many families. It is followed by a huge feast, called “le Reveillon” (from the verb “reveiller,” to wake up or to revive). “Le Reveillon” is a symbolic awakening to the meaning of Christ’s birth and is the culinary high point of the season, which may be enjoyed at home or in a restaurant or cafe that is open all night. Pray that this year, many French people will indeed be “awakened” or “revived” to the Truth.

PEOPLES OF NORTHERN ZAMBIA - “The walk to the nearest water source for baptism was like none we’d experienced before, as we trudged through the Zambian bush for six miles one way! Although it was a long, tiring journey for everyone, the beautiful Zambian bush and a sweet spirit surrounded us as we went farther and farther into what felt like the depths of Africa. While only three women walked this journey (the chief’s wife, a pregnant woman, and the missionary), there were numerous men and around 20 young children who served as the impromptu ‘choir’ during the baptismal service. As new believer Samuel* shared his testimony just before his baptism, he spoke of the ‘amaka’ (the Bemba word for power) of Jesus changing his life. Samuel was so thankful for each person who attended his baptism, as he knew the sacrifice of simply getting to and from the water source. What a memorable day it was for the many Zambians who were a part of this baptism or who heard about it later in the week! Praise the Lord for another changed life through Jesus Christ!” (*pseudonym)

CompassionNet's Today's Prayer

Prayer requests on the website are updated every Monday-Friday at 9:30 a.m., EST

December 19, 2013

"The Word became flesh and took up residence among us. We observed His glory, the glory as the One and Only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth." (John 1:14, HCSB)

WORLD LEADER - “Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence” (1 Timothy 2:1-2). Please pray today for President Hasan Fereidun Ruhani of Iran (southwestern Asia, between Iraq and Pakistan).

SUB-SAHARAN AFRICAN PEOPLES. There is instability in Juba, the capital of South Sudan. Please pray for South Sudan. Thank God that our personnel are not near the danger. Petition for the safety of those whom we dearly love and partner with who are in a more precarious position. Much work has been done in South Sudan so that the Gospel can be shared. Please intercede for this nation that is “white unto harvest.”

CHINESE PEOPLE OF THE AMERICAS - God is at work, calling out Latino believers to work among the East Asian people! Eleven single Brazilian missionaries left at the end of October to spend three years ministering among the unengaged unreached people groups (UUPGs) of East Asia. Four other Brazilian families are currently in the training process to deploy to East Asia in early 2014 to work among the UUPGs there. Please pray for the Brazilian missionaries who have already gone to East Asia and those who are preparing to go soon. Please intercede for other Brazilian and Latino nationals who are also responding to God’s call on their lives to work among Asians in Brazil, Latin America, and the Caribbean. The need is great, and the laborers are few, but as God calls out these Latino nationals to work in the harvest, many more can be reached for Christ.

SAUDI ARABS OF SAUDI ARABIA (SAU-dee) - An estimated 70,000 Saudis are studying in the United States and Canada. Many are curious about Santa Claus and Christmas trees, but few understand the real reason for our Christmas celebrations. Please pray that believers across North America will invite Saudis into their homes this Christmas season, demonstrate the love of Jesus, and share why Jesus came. Will you prayerfully consider connecting with Saudi students in your town?

News

IMB president witnesses church-planting movement in Cuba
“I found it surprising, almost shocking,” said IMB President Tom Elliff, “to find some of the greatest expressions of faith within 100 miles of the United States.” Today, an estimated 900 churches and 6,500-plus missions and house churches can be found in Cuba.

First person: Worker asks, ‘Will South Africa keep Mandela’s ideals?’
“Incarcerated from 1962-1990, Mandela used his time in prison to study extensively. I sensed his shift from radical policies to more conciliatory ones as I observed him from nearby Zimbabwe and Mozambique as I served in Africa with IMB. He expertly navigated the turbulent times that characterized South Africa emerging from apartheid.”

WorldView: Mandela and the power of forgiveness
“There was near-certainty that the country would explode in violence and descend into civil war,” one Southern Baptist missionary in Africa recalls. “Those horrors were averted because one man who was intimate with injustice had the wisdom to realize that retribution was fatally poisonous and redemption a healing balm.” That man was Nelson Mandela.

WorldView: Late for Christmas

Lives intertwine through faithful praying
It was hard. We wanted to give up, but you don’t just “unadopt” someone. We couldn’t give up on taking the Gospel to this unengaged, unreached people group. We vowed that we were in it for the long haul … not one year but as long as it takes. Now, years later, there are believers … even a church! Follow the journey of an Arkansas church who embraced an unengaged, unreached people group in India. First-person stories, photos, video and a timeline tell their incredible story.

Speaking of missions

Missions by the book: The Word became flesh
“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14, ESV).

Quotable: In memory of The Gift
“Is not the festive season when families and friends exchange gifts in memory of The Gift laid on the altar of the world for the redemption of the human race, the most appropriate time to consecrate a portion from abounding riches and scant poverty to send forth the good tidings of great joy into all the earth?”
— Lottie Moon, Sept. 15, 1887

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!
