Their shepherds have led them astray, turning them away on the mountains.” (Jeremiah 50:6b, ESV) Hi, this is Eleanor Witcher of IMB’s prayer office, asking you to pray for two unengaged people groups of Central Asia. The Meskhetian (pronounced mes-KET-ee-an) Turks are displaced from their homeland: the Meskheti region of Georgia. Their population within Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan totals approximately 377,000, and there are now a significant number of them in the United States as well. Like others before them, the Meskhetians were forcibly moved deeper into the former Soviet Union, where they were and are looked upon as second-class citizens. Technically, some segments of the population are not unengaged by the gospel, but the vast majority have little to no access. The Meskhetians hold to their traditional customs from Georgia, with Russian traditions blended in. They are primarily Sunni Muslims, but also mix in pre-Islamic beliefs such as magic and sorcery. Those with a heart for this people group believe that things are on the “precipice of something special.” Bareena* and her son Anwar* heard the gospel and believed in Christ two years ago in the capital city of Dagestan, Russia. Hundreds of miles away, Teemur* also heard and believed the Truth while working as a construction worker in Moscow. Teemur, Bareena and Anwar are the first known believers among the 30,000 Muslim Rutul (pronounced ROOH-toohl) people of Russia. Praise the Lord! Teemur, Bareena and Anwar may well be used by God for the expansion of the gospel across many Rutul families, clans and villages. * Please pray that God will strengthen these new believers through the Holy Spirit so that they will be firmly established and able to comprehend fully the depth of Christ’s love for them. * Pray for workers to have access to the Meskhetian people and stability amongst them so they may learn the language and culture and engage the people. * Ask God to remind us to pray for the thousands of unengaged people until all have had opportunity to hear His Word.
