The Futa Toro Fulani culture of West Africa breeds a lot of fear and distrust through deception. Often the deception seems innocent, meant to avoid confrontation and maintain peace between family members and friends, but in the end leaves people wary of whom they can trust. This is compounded for seekers and believers by the fear of persecution for having an interest in or following the road of Jesus. These very real cultural factors create a barrier in gathering believers to form churches. When immediate family members are resistant to disclosing their beliefs to each other, how can believers from diverse castes be encouraged to be vulnerable to each other? Baptisms are to be a joyful occasion of celebrating with a community one of the first steps of obedience in following Jesus. However, in some parts of India, it is not the community event that it should be due to fear and laws. People can be followers of Jesus and not attract much attention as long as they delay baptism or the sharing of their new hope. When they are challenged to follow Christ’s example in baptism and in sharing the news of the kingdom of God, then they come under spiritual attack. They are shunned by their community and their families, and at times, they have to move outside of the village. * Please pray for strength for followers in India, and ask that they will be used as salt and light in their communities no matter the cost. * Intercede for the Futa Toro Fulani believers and seekers to allow the perfect love of the Savior to cast out all fear and empower them to overcome the barriers that divide them, enabling them to form a family of believers. * Give thanks for God’s perfect love that casts out all fear. |
