When Mebo children of Laos play a chasing game, they often refer to it as playing “evil spirit,” where everyone runs from the person identified as the “evil spirit.” Children often will ask each other, “Are you afraid of spirits?” The spiritual world is very real to the Mebo. Most can and will readily tell you if they have ever seen a spirit before, what it looked like, and where it would appear. The Mebo build miniature houses (about the size of bird houses) that they set outside of their own homes in hopes that the spirit will choose to live in that house instead of their own. Every Mebo owns one and frequently sets offerings out in the miniature house to appease the spirits and allure them away from their own dwelling. Nathan* was a 7-year-old Swazi boy who lived on a homestead with several families that included his mother, two sisters and grandmother. They attend the Baptist church in their community in Swaziland. Nathan became ill with unfamiliar symptoms, and because of their fear and uncertainty, his family felt that someone had put a spell upon the family. Medical treatment for Nathan was not sought, because they believed that to do so would mean his death. Without the needed treatment, Nathan died a week later. Even Christian Swazis have a very difficult time releasing non-Christian principles that are a part of their culture. * Please pray for Swazis who have accepted Jesus as Savior to become completely unchained from their culture that holds them in bondage. * Pray that the Mebo of Laos will begin to see the futility of controlling the spirits themselves, and learn of the one true God who has power over every being. * Intercede for children living in fear-based cultures to find peace and hope in the Savior.
