COASTAL SWAHILI PEOPLES OF EAST AFRICA (swah-HEE-lee) - “Training and discipling Muslim-background believers has been challenging and exciting all at the same time. Watching them grow in faith and obedience has been a true blessing. Four of these young men feel called to full-time ministry, yet they lack the training they need. Following much prayer, we are recommending that they apply to a Baptist seminary in our country. Interviews will be held this month, and if they are accepted, they will begin making the necessary preparations. Please pray that God will open doors for those who are called, that they will have sufficient resources to complete the task, and that through their theological education, many churches will be planted along the Swahili coast.” CONCHUCOS QUECHUA OF PERU (cohn-CHOO-cohs KEH-choo-ah) - “Two young men--new teammates--will arrive in early October. Alex and Taylor are being sent out by a partnership of several churches to work with our Ancash Quechua Team for a two-year term of service. When they arrive from language school, life will be a bit different for them as they settle into an isolated area in the cold, wet, mountainous town of Yanama. Pray for them as they settle in, asking that they will adjust well to a new culture and area. Ask the Lord to open doors for them to develop relationships with people. Their first opportunity to build relationships will be with the family that owns the house where they will live (the family itself lives on the first floor of the two-story house). The family separated, and it was only after five harrowing hours that they were reunited.   Theological education is primary strategy for Eurasia IMB is re-emphasizing theological education as a primary strategy for reaching the lost of Europe and Central Asia. With new personnel on the ground and a renewed impetus for training leaders, Eurasia leadership foresees a future of multiplied church planting.   Missionaries’ reach extends to all of East Africa through students Discipleship is multiplied in East Africa as IMB missionaries like Anthony Shelton mentor seminary students like George Mbonye. The students are then empowered to return home to disciple other leaders and community members.   WorldView: No shortcuts for disciples We want closeness to God without prayer, Bible knowledge without study, church growth without missions, blessings without obedience. But there are no shortcuts to becoming a disciple. God’s economy doesn’t work that way. Grace is free, but it isn’t cheap. It cost God the life of His Son. The Ngonde (pronounced N-gone-day) people of northern Malawi have a population of approximately 155,000. Most Ngonde have a piece of land on which they will grow rice or maize. The religion of the Ngonde is African traditional religion (ATR), which is still widespread. Many Ngonde Christians struggle to not revert to their former beliefs. For example, when a person becomes sick or suddenly dies, the traditional thought is that someone has cursed that person and he or she, if still alive, needs to go to the witch doctor to uncover who paid for the curse. Christians need to grow to trust that God is in control and is more powerful than any curse or evil that might come their way.  Last month, the Fulakunda Team experienced the first death of a local believer. He was a young man, no more than 21 years old, and he was the only believer in his family. While believers rejoice that he dedicated his life to Christ and served God in the ways that he could, everyone mourns this young man’s premature death.  Several believers were able to pray with a South Asian man in Kenya who was facing liver disease before he died. God has provided a good job for his widow as she takes care of her two teenage children. She is a believer but is not currently going to church and Bible study.  * Please pray for these two South Asian teenagers in Kenya that they will trust in Jesus as Savior and grow in faith with their mother. * Intercede for the Fulakunda family of this young believer that they will sense the Lord’s comfort and turn to Him for salvation.   * Ask God to help Ngonde believers resist the darkness of tradition for His marvelous light.

Please pray today for President Francois Bozize of Central African Republic (central Africa, north of Democratic Republic of the Congo). BEIJING, CHINA (BAY-jing) - October is one of the best times to be in Beijing. The heat of the summer is over. The air is growing noticeably cooler each day as the city moves into autumn. Jackets are being pulled from the closets and blankets can be seen airing out on balconies as people begin to prepare for the coming winter weather. The month began with the celebration of National Day, roughly equivalent to the Fourth of July in the United States. It is a time when schools and businesses take a brief vacation before diving into the daily grind of work and classes until the next holiday at Chinese New Year. The city is spruced up and decorated with flowers and banners. There is usually a large celebration in Tiananmen Square. One of the most striking and beautiful sites in the city can be seen from Fragrant Hills, to the northwest. Every year, thousands of tourists come to see and walk through the spectacular natural scenery of the flaming red of tree leaves as they blanket the entire mountain. It is an amazing and beautiful sight to see. Pray that the power of the Master Designer of the universe will speak loudly through His creation. Pray for opportunities as families and friends gather to point people to the precious gift of Jesus. FAR EASTERN PLAINS PEOPLES OF SOUTH ASIA - These last eight weeks, a group of 25 believers from one church have been doing an intense training called “Be Transformed,” which involves a weekly teaching session followed by homework and practical application. The study is about renewing our minds with truth by depending on the Holy Spirit in the midst of the problems of life. As the study wraps up this month, pray that these believers (many of whom are new believers) will truly experience breakthrough and victory as they allow the Holy Spirit to transform them.
