“The people who walked in darkness Have seen a great light; Those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, Upon them a light has shined.” (Isaiah 9:2, NKJV)

Hi, this is Eleanor Witcher of IMB’s prayer office, joining you in prayer for those coping with death.

The Ngonde (pronounced N-gone-day) people of northern Malawi have a population of approximately 155,000. Most Ngonde have a piece of land on which they will grow rice or maize. The religion of the Ngonde is African traditional religion (ATR), which is still widespread. Many Ngonde Christians struggle to not revert to their former beliefs. For example, when a person becomes sick or suddenly dies, the traditional thought is that someone has cursed that person and he or she, if still alive, needs to go to the witch doctor to uncover who paid for the curse. Christians need to grow to trust that God is in control and is more powerful than any curse or evil that might come their way.

Last month, the Fulakunda Team experienced the first death of a local believer. He was a young man, no more than 21 years old, and he was the only believer in his family. While believers rejoice that he dedicated his life to Christ and served God in the ways that he could, everyone mourns this young man’s premature death.

Several believers were able to pray with a South Asian man in Kenya who was facing liver disease before he died. God has provided a good job for his widow as she takes care of her two teenage children. She is a believer but is not currently going to church and Bible study.

* Please pray for these two South Asian teenagers in Kenya that they will trust in Jesus as Savior and grow in faith with their mother.

* Intercede for the Fulakunda family of this young believer that they will sense the Lord’s comfort and turn to Him for salvation.

* Ask God to help Ngonde believers resist the darkness of tradition for His marvelous light.
