“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28, NKJV)

Hi, this is Eleanor Witcher of IMB’s prayer office, joining you in prayer for those suffering conditions of poverty.

Many people in Zimbabwe are facing desperate times due to the continued economic problems in the country. Although Zimbabwe is now using U.S. dollars as their currency to stabilize the economy, prices continue to rise frequently and are higher for just about everything than they are in the United States. Yet most people who are employed earn less than $200 a month. Employment still runs above 80 percent. It was recently reported that 2.2 million people (approximately one-fifth of the population of Zimbabwe) have insufficient food to eat on a daily basis. Thankfully, this year’s rainy season seems to be the best in years.

Most Senufo Supyire women of Mali work steadily from before sunup until 10 o’clock at night, pounding food with a heavy pestle, hauling large quantities of water on their head, bending over a basin and washboard to clean clothes, and cooking over an open fire in stifling heat. They also work alongside the men and their children in the fields, plowing, planting, weeding, harvesting and processing crops by hand, since there are few machines available and fewer people who can afford them. Aside from the physical burdens, there’s the mental burden of figuring out how to take care of a large family with many sicknesses and only enough food and money to get by. Spiritually they may be burdened, thinking that if they just do enough good, obey all the rules, or avoid offending the spirits and ancestors, they may be allowed into paradise. Like all people, they are heavy-laden with sin and the fact that they can do nothing about it.

* Please pray that the Senufo Supyire will recognize that Christ took their sin upon Himself and that He will give them rest.

* Intercede for the people of Zimbabwe that they will turn to Jesus in their desperate need.

* Lay your own burdens upon the Lord, asking Him to reveal His provision and rest.
