“For nothing will be impossible with God.” (Luke 1:37, NASB)

Hi, this is Eleanor Witcher of IMB’s prayer office, joining you in prayer for young people to understand purity.

“1+1=1!” The tenth-grade through twelfth-grade students at rural Sioma High School looked at the volunteers incredulously. Again the volunteers repeated God’s math: “1+1=1!” When one man and one woman become intimate, they become one flesh. The Lozi students couldn’t understand. Again and again, the equation was repeated, and again and again, the Lozi youth answered, “1+1=2!” Finally, on the second day of teaching, they understood. The “True Love Waits” program teaches abstinence to youth all over Africa. God’s way is purity before marriage. But purity is not on the radar of the Lozi youth. Promiscuity here is as wide and as deep as the Zambezi River that runs through this forgotten land. The eyes of the Lozi students were skeptical. Could it be possible to control your body and follow God’s plan? The volunteers from Texas encouraged the students . . . “Yes! It’s possible!”

Mbunda and Lozi believers of western Zambia are joining together to make a big change. Traditionally, girls in the area undergo an ungodly initiation ceremony during puberty. Recently the very first Christian initiation ceremony was held at Namushakende Baptist Church. More than 80 people came as the pastor blessed the teenage girl and spoke to her about purity. Her parents blessed her by reading Scripture over her. The church members were challenged to encourage her and to be good examples. The young girl-now-turned-woman chose to make a “True Love Waits” vow.

* Please pray that many other families in western Zambia will choose this new, God-centered way of leading their daughters into womanhood.

* Intercede for these Lozi youth that they will accept Jesus as their Savior who is able to give them the strength to make wise decisions.

* Ask God to bless the youth workers in your own congregation as they model godly living and guide the next generation of Christian leaders to live pure lives.

“With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26)

WORLD LEADER - “Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence” (1 Timothy 2: 1-2). Please pray today for President Xi Jinping of China (eastern and central Asia).

SOWETO, SOUTH AFRICA (soh-WEH-toh) - “The community of Tshepisong, on the northwestern edge of Soweto, South Africa, is a dark place,” writes the Soweto Evangelism Team. “A pastor who used to work there met a missionary on our team, and when the South African pastor found out where he was working, he kept repeating, ‘You need lots of prayer, oh yes, lots of prayer. That is an evil place.’ We are still asking God to bring believers together in Tshepisong to become a church. Pray for strong, dedicated leaders to emerge. Only God can change hearts.”
alanandbethlocke@gmail.com

SRI LANKA - “Other seeds fell into the good soil, and as they grew up and increased, they yielded a crop and produced thirty, sixty, and a hundredfold” (Mark 4:8). Earlier this year, Pastor M. had the chance to travel with a cross-cultural worker to a church-planting movement forum where he learned more about CPM strategies. At that training, one of the men sharing taught about finding the “hundredfold man.” The teacher encouraged each church planter present to seek the person who would yield a hundredfold and then spend time with that person. As Pastor M. considered each person the Lord had given him to mentor, A. kept coming to mind. With Pastor M.’s intentional mentoring and encouragement, in one month A. shared the Gospel with approximately 250 people and many prayed to receive Jesus as their Lord and Savior! These new believers are now being formed into groups and being discipled by A. Pray for those who prayed to receive Christ to be sincere in their faith and obey God’s Word as they learn it. Also pray for Pastor M. to continue to spend special time with A., teaching him how to move these new believers from discipleship groups to healthy house churches.

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is God’s power for salvation to everyone who believes, first to the Jew, and also to the Greek.” (Romans 1:16, HCSB)

Hi, this is Eleanor Witcher of IMB’s prayer office, asking you to pray for new workers as they head to the field.

Sun, sand, food, and fun are often associated with the countries of Spain, Portugal, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Italy and Malta. These nations are full of people who do not see their surroundings as just tourist destinations; they call them “home.” Many people, when first approached about living in one of these places, would gladly say yes and find it glamorous. However, when the everyday reality of language and cultural learning begins, life can get complicated. First-term IMB personnel come with great enthusiasm and yet couples may struggle to not allow stress to come between them, and singles search for the “family” they need on the field.

A missionary family has just moved to South Sudan to be the first Engagement Team members living in the country. They will map their city and train local leaders in the “why’s” and “how’s” of that helpful tool for evangelism. They hope to move to another large village in the next few months to begin a language and culture study of a Muslim unengaged unreached people group (UUPG).

Amanda, a ‘Hands On’ missionary, recently joined the Ancash Quechua Team in Peru to serve for eight months. She has come to minister alongside the Murphree family in San Luis, focusing mainly on homeschooling responsibilities related to the family’s two children. While desiring to bond quickly to the Murphree family, she also wants time to minister to the people of San Luis.

* Please pray for Amanda as she bonds to the Murphree family and seeks ministry among the people of Peru.

* Ask God to help this new family in South Sudan adapt well to their new country, culture, and language.

* Intercede for the Davidsons that they will have a deep and abiding love for the people of Malta.

“Ask of Me, and I will make the nations Your inheritance and the ends of the earth Your possession.” (Psalm 2:8)

Please pray today for President Sebastian Pinera Echenique of Chile (western South America).

NGONDE OF NORTHERN MALAWI (N-gone-day) - Mr. K loved to drink and enjoyed the company of many women, even though he was married with several children--that is, until the day he heard the Gospel message and asked Jesus into his life. He began going to a Baptist church in his village and heard that a missionary would be coming to teach a Bible study. He signed up for it. The missionary met Mr. K and remembers that he would barely answer any questions and had little confidence. Now this man is one of the most respected and bold men in his village! Please pray that the Lord will protect, lead and strengthen Mr. K, now a pastor, as he works to start more churches among the Ngonde people.

SOUTHERN YEMENI ARABS OF YEMEN (YEH-muh-nee) - Thank you for praying for J, who was faithful to visit his home village and encourage the brothers there. J was excited to see how the brothers are growing and even meeting together for fellowship, to study the Word, and pray. J is continuing to share boldly, and others have believed. Praise God for His work through J and the other believers!

Dear Urgent Prayer e-letter subscriber,

For about a decade, we have utilized the Urgent Prayer e-letter distribution to inform you of natural disasters, medical emergencies, and matters of imminent persecution, focusing on events for which we will be able to give follow up information. You have blessed those overseas by praying and the Lord has answered our prayers by bringing comfort, healing, and resolution.

With changes in technology, there are now multiple ways to communicate these messages. Therefore, we are eliminating the existing Urgent Prayer e-letter and encourage you to look for crisis messages in the following resources:

“Leave the children alone, and don’t try to keep them from coming to Me, because the kingdom of heaven is made up of people like this.” (Matthew 19:14)

Please pray today for Prime Minister Emmanuel Nadingar of Chad (western Africa).

ISAAN STUDENTS OF THAILAND (EE-sahn) - Isaan believers, with assistance from IMB personnel, summer students workers, and a volunteer team, have been involved in a village ministry in recent months at three elementary schools. A local pastor and his wife tell Bible stories weekly after the students have studied English with the volunteers. In one of the villages, several of the fifth- and sixth-grade boys have shown a lot of interest in learning more. They ask questions and are reading the New Testaments that have been given to them. Praise God, who is at work in the lives of these children! Pray for several adults to be “persons of peace” (Luke 10:6) in this village and for the ministry team to know the Lord’s leadership in this work. Pray that this work will develop into a church in this local village.

NORTH TOKYO, JAPAN (TOH-kyoh) - In September, Franklin Graham and his organization will be holding a special revival crusade in the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake/Tsunami devastation area. North Tokyo Team members Kevin and Donna Qualls and their children live in Sendai, which is in the heart of this area. A volunteer team from a church in Georgia will be participating in this event, and there are Southern Baptists involved in many aspects of it. Due to the crisis, there was a Gospel breakthrough to the Japanese last year that had not previously been seen. Now two years later, the Japanese in this area have adjusted and normalized, meaning that hearts not already yielded to Him have the potential of going back to the condition they were in before the disaster struck. In light of this, the revival event in this area presents a wonderful opportunity for the Qualls family. Please be praying for this family as they reap the harvest from the seed sown by this crusade and other believers during this time. Also pray for the 83 local churches (averaging about 27 people each) in this area that have the opportunity to respond to the lost and hurting here. Lives are in the balance, and the workers are few! Pray that God will supernaturally increase the abilities and effectiveness of the believers and missionaries here in Japan.

“Yet those who wait for the Lord will gain new strength; They will mount up with wings like eagles, They will run and not get tired, They will walk and not become weary.” (Isaiah 40:31, NASB)

Hi, this is Eleanor Witcher of IMB’s prayer office, praying for spiritual renewal.

Recently, some workers in Turkey gathered together at the top of a mountain for a week of worship and encouragement. They were reminded of the power, the beauty, and the simple truths of the Good News. They were challenged to persist in desperate, bold and faith-filled prayers. They were encouraged to look around to see who they can love each day and look for ways to express that love. They were asked to examine their hearts with the intent of identifying and tearing down idols they had set up in place of the Creator. What a blessing to have an intimate relationship with the Savior!

As they return home and continue in the ministries the Father has entrusted to them, these workers ask for prayer that they will be faithful to live out what they heard and experienced.

This week, Tuesday and Wednesday, staff members will have a similar opportunity as these workers. We will enjoy our Annual Staff Retreat, trusting the Lord to remind us of His power and beauty. A team is traveling to Richmond to lead the retreat and many are actively organizing and preparing the rooms, the materials, the meals. We express thanks in advance for the opportunity for fellowship and growth.

* Please pray that as workers in Turkey are satisfied in Jesus, love and a bold witness will overflow into their relationships with the Aegean Turks.

* Intercede for workers living in complicated communities—facing opposition from the culture or the seeming lack of spiritual interest—that they will be persistent in sharing the Good News of Jesus and in finding effective bridges to the Gospel.

* Pray for staff members of the International Mission Board as we step away from our desks to experience the Lord’s encouragement and challenge.

*** Our offices will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday, September 24-25. The next PrayerLine will be distributed Friday, September 27. Thank you for your understanding ***

A NOTE FROM THE PRAYER OFFICE: On Tuesday, September 24, and Wednesday, September 25, IMB staff will be attending our Annual Staff Retreat, so “Today’s Prayer will not be available on those days. Thank you.

“Declare His glory among the nations, His wonderful works among all peoples.” (1 Chronicles 16:24)

Please pray today for Prime Minister Jose Maria Pereira Neves of Cape Verde (North Atlantic Ocean, west of Senegal, Africa).

EASTERN THARU OF NEPAL (tah-ROO) - Please pray for a Tharu church body that is seeking a couple of qualified believers from their own body to go and live in a remote Tharu village. Their purpose is to share the Truth, gather believers into a local church, and teach those new believers to share with and disciple others. This church’s plan is to support the “seed spreaders” by giving a portion of their own crops for them to eat, so that the “seed spreaders” won’t have to buy rice, lentils or whatever is in season at the time. That way, the church will exercise giving while freeing up the “seed spreaders” to sow spiritual seed. The remoteness of this village will make living there much more difficult than where they now live. Please pray that those chosen will the ones who have been first chosen and equipped by God, and ask that they’ll be willing to live for God’s purpose in harder conditions.
http://southasianpeoples.imb.org/

NKOYA OF WESTERN ZAMBIA (n-COY-yah) - While witch doctors, praying to ancestors, and traditional village ceremonies sound like talk reserved for documentaries or “National Geographic,” they are alive and well in Maziba-Kaoma, Zambia. In this small, rural area, there are 14 witch doctors and traditional African doctors. The chief witch doctor is brother to the first Baptist believer in this area. K was the first one to receive Christ in this remote place. However, he has now been joined by many others. The local IMB missionary was hoping to plant a new Baptist church in Maziba. Initially, after K’s surrender to Christ, other villagers were scared away from becoming Christians. Now, however, the Lord has truly shown Himself strong and has started what appears to be a revival in this area. During a recent trip, when the missionary was camping in the area, many received Christ. While this area is filled with all the major tribes of the Western Province of Zambia, the “nduna” (traditional “chief” of the area) is Nkoya. He has given the missionaries permission to start meeting and teaching at the local community school. It was no coincidence that the first time the missionaries visited his home, two of his family members received Christ. Additionally, his wife was sick with serious body ailments and little sleep. When the missionaries returned, they discovered the wife fully recovered and giving praise to God for her healing. The time is right for a Baptist church in this area. Pray that God will truly bring the increase.

“You are blessed when they insult and persecute you and falsely say every kind of evil against you because of Me.” (Matthew 5: 11, HCSB)

Hi, this is Eleanor Witcher of IMB’s prayer office, asking to pray for those facing persecution.

House churches are continuing to multiply throughout Kabylia, Algeria. The authorities have declared these meetings to be illegal. If a group is caught, they risk financial penalties and loss of the property. The authorities have given permission for these groups to build church buildings, but there are little or no funds for property or construction.

Christians in Sri Lanka are also facing persecution, and in many cases are being denied basic things like education for their children or even funeral services (such as the preparation of the body). There has also been opposition to house churches, so laws are being passed to restrict worship services outside of legally registered churches.

In a regional center city outside of Kharkov, Ukraine, members of a small Baptist church continue to encounter great opposition as they seek to reach out to the community around them. At times, the pastor has been physically threatened for simply inviting residents to their services. For almost a year, their documents for the registration of their church (as well as for several other churches in the area) have sat on the desk of authorities, unsigned.

Four local partners have seen God move powerfully in their Southeast Asian ministries. All of them have been threatened because of their boldness to share the Gospel. Some of them have spent time in jail, some have taken beatings. It is humbling to see their passion and dedication to seeing the unreached people groups around them come to know the Lord.

* Please pray for these partners and their families as they sacrifice in order to spread the Good News.

* Join Team Kharkov in praying for this small Baptist church as they persevere despite discouragement.

* Pray that God will provide a way for Kabyle and Sri Lankan groups to have church buildings where they can worship without fear.
