Again the volunteers repeated God’s math: “1+1=1!” When one man and one woman become intimate, they become one flesh. The Lozi students couldn’t understand. Again and again, the equation was repeated, and again and again, the Lozi youth answered, “1+1=2!” Finally, on the second day of teaching, they understood. The “True Love Waits” program teaches abstinence to youth all over Africa. God’s way is purity before marriage. But purity is not on the radar of the Lozi youth. Promiscuity here is as wide and as deep as the Zambezi River that runs through this forgotten land. The eyes of the Lozi students were skeptical. Could it be possible to control your body and follow God’s plan? The volunteers from Texas encouraged the students . . . “Yes! It’s possible!” Mbunda and Lozi believers of western Zambia are joining together to make a big change. Traditionally, girls in the area undergo an ungodly initiation ceremony during puberty. Recently the very first Christian initiation ceremony was held at Namushakende Baptist Church. More than 80 people came as the pastor blessed the teenage girl and spoke to her about purity. Her parents blessed her by reading Scripture over her. The church members were challenged to encourage her and to be good examples. The young girl-now-turned-woman chose to make a “True Love Waits” vow. * Please pray that many other families in western Zambia will choose this new, God-centered way of leading their daughters into womanhood. * Intercede for these Lozi youth that they will accept Jesus as their Savior who is able to give them the strength to make wise decisions. * Ask God to bless the youth workers in your own congregation as they model godly living and guide the next generation of Christian leaders to live pure lives. |
