“You shall then sound a ram’s horn abroad on the tenth day of the seventh month; on the day of atonement you shall sound a horn all through your land.” (Leviticus 25:9, NASB)

Hi, this is Eleanor Witcher of IMB’s prayer office, joining you in prayer for those seeking atonement.

The month of September has been filled with holidays, called the High Holy Days or the Days of Awe, for the Jewish people. Rosh Hashanah, the Feast of Trumpets, was observed at the first of the month, followed by the most important Yom Kippur, The Day of Atonement. It is the day when practicing Jews return to God: “At one-ment” or being one with God. They believe that it is then that God decides for that year if their name is in the Book of Life. That will now be followed by the Feast of Tabernacles, which signifies their living in the desert for 40 years and how God led them to the Promised Land.

There is a custom during the last service of Yom Kippur where everyone in attendance gathers under a prayer shawl, a “tallit.” Families gather together under a single “tallit,” but any non-Jewish people in attendance are invited to join in under someone else’s. The prayers for forgiveness cannot begin until every last person is covered. It is a very touching depiction of God’s amazing grace and His desire that every single person receive that grace. It is a great honor to be invited to the service, as it reflects a trust in and love for the one invited.

* Please pray that the Holy Spirit will inspire conversations concerning grace between followers of Jesus and those who invited them to participate in the family celebration.

* Ask God to write the meanings of these days on the hearts of the Jewish people so that they will earnestly seek the face of the God of Abraham.

* Seek out your Jewish neighbors to express gratitude for our God who led them out of the wilderness and longs to lead all of us to His eternal promised land.
