“Oh come, let us sing to the Lord! Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving; Let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms. For the Lord is the great God, And the great King above all gods.” (Psalm 95:1-3, NKJV)

Hi, this is Eleanor Witcher of IMB’s prayer office, joining you in giving thanks.

During this month, many activities in Beijing, China will focus on the holiday of Thanksgiving to draw people to hear the message of the gospel. Churches will host Thanksgiving-style dinners--not with turkey and football, but with local dishes and performances that give a strong message of God’s love for all people. Groups of believers will invite their nonbelieving friends to come and eat together and then begin discussions about their gratitude for what God has done in their lives.

With the holiday season upon us, international believers living Tajikistan have many chances to share about Jesus and the gospel. Often people have heard bits and pieces of information about American holidays, but don’t understand the spiritual implications of these celebrations.

Team Marseille is showing their friends in France what they are thankful for: Jesus Christ. Celebrating this unique American holiday with French people, they have rented a room and are sharing with their friends both food and thankfulness in Jesus. They expect around 80 people.

Two new teammates arrived in the Netherlands this month and are helping with Thanksgiving outreach events with Turks. They will need to adjust quickly and make quick friendships as they help with preparing the food and decorations.

* Please pray for clear presentations of the gospel among the different languages that are represented in the Netherlands and among those attending the Thanksgiving feast in France.

* Pray for the various activities in Beijing and Tajikistan to touch many people with the Good News of what God has done.

* Paramount in our thankfulness, we are thankful to God for our salvation and the honor to serve Him. We are also thankful for you, our faithful prayer supporters. For our partnership in this great task of reaching the nations, we give humble thanks.

***Our offices will be closed or Thanksgiving. The next PrayerLine text will be distributed December 1. Thank you for your understanding and faithful, fervent prayers.***

A NOTE FROM THE PRAYER OFFICE: IMB will be closed on Thursday and Friday, November 27 and 28, due to the Thanksgiving holiday, so “Today’s Prayer” will not be available on those days. Thank you.

Prayer requests on the website are updated every Monday-Friday at 9:30 a.m., EST

November 26, 2014

“God will bless us, and all the ends of the earth will fear Him.” (Psalm 67:7, HCSB)

ATHLETES OF EAST ASIA - “The month of November brings one of our biggest opportunities to share with the students and athletes. We will be hosting many Thanksgiving parties in our homes, with turkey and all the trimmings. Curiosity draws the students, most of whom have never tasted turkey. We then share the meaning of the holiday, sing songs, and give a testimony of the Lord’s blessing. Please pray that the Lord will draw many students and athletes to Himself as they ‘taste and see that the Lord is good’ (Psalm 34:8). May they accept His free gift of salvation.”

TUNISIAN ARABS OF SOUTHERN TUNISIA (too-NEE-zhan) - After a family crisis, the Kessine* family was shamed by their community. Simultaneously, all the young adult children in the family began searching for truth, realizing that their traditional beliefs were empty and meaningless. They found the Word on the Internet, and recognized it as Truth. One of the daughters had a dream about the Bible, and heard a voice say, “There is nothing above this and nothing under it.” They requested a book in a follow-up system, and when the meeting was arranged, two of the sisters discussed the possibility of it being a trap. They finally decided that if they were going to die, they might as well die together. They met with followers of Jesus and received a Bible. One of the sisters is definitely a follower; the other one wants to make sure before she commits. Now the entire family is reading and studying the Word, and learning how to follow the Father through the Son! Please lift up the Kessine family, asking that the Father will save those who are still unsure. Pray that they will grow in their faith and boldness, and that He will use this family to transform their town for the glory of God! Ask that the Father will continue to call out entire families to follow Him in southern Tunisia. (*name changed)

WORLD LEADER - “Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence” (1 Timothy 2:1-2, NKJV).  Please pray today for Prime Minister Narendra Damodardas Modi of India (southern Asia).

“May God be praised! He has not turned away my prayer or turned His faithful love from me.” (Psalm 66:20, HCSB)

Please pray today for Prime Minister Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson of Iceland (island in the North Atlantic Ocean).

AMAZON PEOPLES OF THE AMAZON RIVER BASIN (AM-uh-zahn) - Xipi* is a 4-year-old boy who was abandoned by his parents in a river town. His uncle found him crying in an empty house and brought him to live with those serving at the Christian Training Center. Xipi is the first one up in the morning and goes around waking everyone else. He has a tiny Bible that someone gave him, and he carries it around with him. God has plans for this young boy. Please pray for the directors of the Christian Training Center as they raise little Xipi. Ask God to give them the wisdom and patience to educate him according to biblical principles. Pray that God will use Xipi to take the Gospel to his own people. (*name changed)

SENUFO SUPYIRE OF MALI (SIN-oo-fo su-PEER-ay) - “We were planning to have our first volunteer team join us in Mali this month, but due to various circumstances, we felt it best to delay those plans. The church from Louisiana has sent teams to other parts of Sub-Saharan Africa, but this will be their first time coming to Mali. Please pray for wisdom for both us and their missions committee as we decide when the team should come in 2015 and what ministry they should have while here. We have a lot to learn since this will be our first time to host a volunteer team and they will be learning to make adjustments for the differences between Mali and where they have served before. Please pray for us and the team from Louisiana as we make arrangements for their time here to be effective in sharing the Good News and love of Christ with the Senufo Supyire people.”

“You believe that God is one; you do well. The demons also believe—and they shudder.” (James 2:19, HCSB)

Hi, this is Eleanor Witcher of IMB’s prayer office, asking you to pray for new believers.

Nearly 100 Miao from the Land of Fire have come to Christ this year. One of the biggest challenges has been for these new believers to stop venerating demons. Their whole lives, they have lived in fear of evil spirits, believing that every sickness and malady is a result of demonic oppression, and they have followed a complicated system of rituals to appease those spirits. In August, several of these new believers said that they could see no way to stop appeasing spirits, as their families would expect them to perform the rituals. But then one of the believers dreamed that she saw a demon. In the dream, God told her, “Don’t be afraid. I have come to save you from the demons.” Then, to the evil spirit, He said, “Go!” and it disappeared. She felt such peace, and felt His love so deeply, that the next morning, she told all the new believers about her dream and said that God is more powerful than all the demons. As a result, they cut the amulets off of their children and have chosen to worship God alone.

There are two men in Dakar, Senegal who need our prayers. Mike* is a tall guard who first heard the gospel a few months ago and continues to learn more and more about Jesus, but he has not yet been obedient to follow Jesus. Larry* is a new believer of a few months who also continues to study God’s Word daily. He has not been obedient to express his faith in Jesus through baptism.

* Please pray that both of these men, and others in Dakar like them, will surrender in obedience to God’s direction.

* Intercede for these new believers in East Asia that they will step forward in baptism, be completely free from demonic influence, and grow in their faith.

* Ask God to lead you out of fear and into unwavering obedience.

“In the same way the Spirit also joins to help in our weakness, because we do not know what to pray for as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with unspoken groanings.” (Romans 8:26, HCSB)

Please pray today for Prime Minister Viktor Orban of Hungary (eastern Europe, between Austria and Romania).

HO CHI MINH CITY, VIETNAM (HOE-chee-men) - Every morning Ha* wakes up with the smell of incense from the altar. She spends her days working at a sewing machine in her house, not 10 feet from that same altar. She watches most of her family members bowing to the idols or placing fresh fruit offerings on the altar where they sit. Ha is grateful that her family allows her to remain in the house even though she is openly a Christian and doesn’t participate in the religious rituals of her parents and siblings. Still, being almost constantly surrounded by the darkness of idol worship in her home keeps an oppressive weight on her. Please ask God to continue to strengthen Ha in her faith and revive her with joy. Pray that her words of testimony and perseverance in faith will open the eyes of her family so that they, too, will believe in Jesus. (*name changed)

TURKS OF EUROPE - Please lift up the Thanksgiving outreach events in the Netherlands. Pray for open, receptive hearts and unity among the team and their families as they organize the dinners. They are thankful that two new teammates will be just moving in and will able to help out. Ask for their smooth transition to the country. Pray for those preparing the food and decorations to be blessed, and ask that those invited will want to come. Pray for the meals to be good, and for everyone to enjoy them. Pray for clear presentations of the Gospel among the different languages that will be represented. Ask that the guests will be drawn to Jesus Christ and be able to have a thankful heart because of the Good News that is shared at the dinners. Pray specifically that the Turks will be drawn to the Lord Jesus Christ because of these events.

“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations...teaching them to observe all that I commanded you.” (Matthew 28:19-20a, NASB)

Hi, this is Eleanor Witcher of IMB’s prayer office, praying with you for those being trained.

A Training for Trainers (T4T) event is taking place in Moscow on November 20-23. Leaders ask you to join them in praying that those trained will show radical obedience to Jesus by modeling/implementing their training to empower local believers for personal evangelism, multiplicative disciple making, and the starting of new Bible groups. A new T4T group was started in Ufa, Russia in late September and meets two Wednesday evenings per month.

An outreach program that took place this fall among Island peoples of the Indian Ocean was a huge success, and much fruit is coming from the Bibles that were distributed. New T4T groups are also beginning in several places on the island. Workers are excited and expectant, in which disciples are being taught who will make disciples, in accord with the Great Commission.

Earlier this year, Baptist representative Ross Mackin and his wife, Shirley, began traveling to churches throughout Central Thailand, sharing basic evangelism training. In T4T, participants are held highly accountable during group time for demonstrating what they are learning and practicing those new skills in their communities. One day Khun Gloria*, a young pastor’s wife who had been a believer for many years, stated, “I never thought evangelism was important. I now realize that the reason was because I felt very uncomfortable. I just didn’t know how to share my faith with others.” She went on to express her gratitude for the simple training she was receiving that allowed her to follow Christ’s command to go into the world.

* Please pray for this young woman in Thailand, Khun Gloria, as she begins to truly share her faith for the first time.

* Join workers in the Indian Ocean as they celebrate the work God is doing in the island.

* Ask God to bless the participants of the training in Russia and for discipling groups to emerge as a result.

“God has listened; He has paid attention to the sound of my prayer.” (Psalm 66:19, HCSB)

Please pray today for Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying of Hong Kong (southeastern coast of China).

JAPAN - Japanese Christian youth are truly an endangered species! When visiting Japanese churches, the absence of Japanese youth is glaringly obvious. For those few Japanese young people born into Christian homes, the tendency is to be pulled from the church from junior high-age onward because school, clubs, tests, and sporting events often take place on Sunday mornings. Japanese youth are generally busier than their university-age older brothers and sisters. Due to the incredible pressure to get into good schools, Japanese youth tend to spend much of their time at school and at “cram schools.” Pray that missionaries, ministry organizations, and churches will have a vision and commitment to getting the Gospel effectively to the Japanese youth. Pray that God will raise up Japanese youth who are faithful in reaching and discipling their friends and families.

MARSEILLE, FRANCE (mar-SAY) - Team Marseille writes: “November brings Thanksgiving, and it also brings a time when we can show our friends here what we are thankful for: Jesus Christ. In an attempt to celebrate this American holiday with French people, we will be renting a room and sharing with these friends both food and our thankfulness in Jesus. We are planning on inviting around 80 people. Pray with us that each one will leave knowing that they, too, can be thankful to God.”

“Tell to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and His strength and His wondrous works that He has done.” (Psalm 78:4b, NKJV)

Please pray today for President Juan Orlando Hernandez Alvarado of Honduras (Central America).

MIDDLE EASTERN ARABS OF THE SOUTHERN UNITED KINGDOM - A family from Saudi Arabia recently moved to a neighborhood in the United Kingdom. The wife and children need help with their English. A believer has committed to helping her and the children with lessons a few times a week. Please pray that the Lord will send this family dreams of the Savior, that miracles will happen, and that they will hear a clear presentation of the Gospel. The husband is studying at a nearby university, so please also ask that God will show him the love of Jesus and totally overwhelm and surround him with loving believers who will continue to show him the way. Please petition for the salvation of the whole family!

PEOPLES OF THE GARDEN ROUTE, SOUTH AFRICA - Missionary Amy Barbour writes: “My husband, Chuck, loves walking through the market areas of the Central Business District of town here in George, South Africa. It is amazing how many different peoples and languages you can hear when your ears are opened by the Holy Spirit! Walking along one day, Chuck heard a voice calling to him from behind the clothing and other goods lined up along the open sidewalk. A man from Somalia, Abel*, called Chuck over and found a little stool for him to sit on. It was clear that Abel was still fairly new here, because his English was patchy and difficult to understand. Perhaps Abel was seeking someone to practice his English with; however, God knew that it was just the right time for Chuck to walk by! Pray for Chuck to have the ability to communicate clearly with this ‘friendly stranger’ and to have many more opportunities to speak to Abel and even to his family. Pray that Abel will be able to supernaturally understand the story of the One who transcends all languages and cultures! “How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? . . . How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace . . .” (Romans 10:14-15b). (*name changed)

“A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is perfectly trained will be like his teacher.” (Luke 6:40, NKJV)

Hi, this is Eleanor Witcher of IMB’s prayer office, asking you to pray for those engaged in training.

God is pouring out His Spirit on the church in Sri Lanka. International workers report that after several years of rejection from the local church, pastors and leaders in every province are now asking for training in church-planting methods. A national team of trainers has emerged who are now leading sessions in which pastors and leaders are evaluating their current methods of evangelism, discipleship and church multiplication to see if they are biblical, effective and reproducible. During a recent three-day training, Pastor Manju* said that he could only attend the first two days due to a previous commitment. When he was the first to arrive on the third and final day, he said, “I wasn’t planning on coming, but as I prayed this morning, I knew I had to come!”

The rugged mountains where the Mountain Yi of East Asia reside makes travel and communication difficult. One particular Yi church went for more than a year without communicating with other churches. But recently they contacted a Yi brother named Timothy*, who had just received training on evangelism and church planting. Timothy, equipped with new training and audio Bible stories in their heart language, met with these believers for a few days of training. They were deeply moved to hear Bible stories in their heart language for the first time. These believers excitedly returned to their home village and immediately began sharing Bible stories with others. Within weeks, they had led more than 40 people to the Lord!

* Please pray for the Good News to continue to take root in the hearts and lives of people in remote, mountainous Yi villages.

* Pray for pastors and leaders in Sri Lanka to abide in Christ daily so they can guide the people in this idolatrous island nation to turn from serving what they have created to the Creator Himself.

* Intercede for those in your own church who are responsible for training others.
