All the families of the nations will bow down before You, for kingship belongs to the Lord; He rules over the nations.” (Psalm 22:27-28, HCSB) Hi, this is Eleanor Witcher of IMB’s prayer office, encouraging you to pray for those being baptized. The new Swahili-speaking Arab believer of East Africa told her friend, “I have read about baptism, and I want to get baptized, but my husband will not allow me. He wants me to wait.” Immediately the friend understood the tug on this sweet sister’s heart--a desire to honor God and a desire to submit to her husband. “I will wait, because I believe that one day my husband will believe and we can be baptized together.” Ahmed*, a gray-bearded man, grabbed the hand of a dripping-wet, new follower of Jesus. He said, “Start counting from this day forward; this is your new birthday.” Ahmed turned to John* and said that he had been baptized in this same place exactly two years ago. Rathi*, the new follower, was not alone in being baptized; several others in Algeria joined him the same day. Perhaps a metal stock tank isn’t the place you imagine to find new followers of Jesus as they walk in obedience to the Son. However, more than a dozen new followers from a suburban Algerian town did just that: got baptized in a stock tank! These new followers were welcomed into the body with shouts from the veteran followers, and the rejoicing was accompanied by the soft guitar-led singing of the Arabic-language version of “I Have Decided to Follow Jesus.” * Please pray that Rathi and other Algerian believers will be loved well by the body of Christ. * Intercede for Swahili-speaking Arab families that they will follow the Lord together. * Give thanks to the Lord for the day of your baptism, recalling the salvation it represents. *names changed |
