“Oh come, let us sing to the Lord! Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving . . . For the Lord is the great God, And the great King above all gods.” (Psalm 95:1-3, NKJV)

Hi, this is Eleanor Witcher of IMB’s prayer office, joining you in giving thanks.

Thanksgiving! November brings an opportunity to share in the custom and meaning of the American Thanksgiving holiday. There are gatherings in homes to share meals and introduce friends to this holiday that most know little about. In some classrooms, Americans can share their culture as they tell about the history of Thanksgiving and how it is a celebration of God’s provision.

Journeymen Daniel Rice, Jose Medina and Megan Stuckey, as well as missionaries Mark and Mie Busby, serving in North Tokyo, Japan, are well into a semester of reaching university students. Seikei, Asia, and Temple Universities, plus a vocational school for acupuncture, all have students responding to their outreach. These North Tokyo Team members, along with Japanese fellow believers, are doing a special once-a-month event the last week of each month. November will be focused on Thanksgiving, since American culture and English are great attractions for Japanese. They will get to share how God was involved with the Pilgrims and how that was inspired by Jesus. They will also get to talk about what they are thankful for, like the cross and the resurrection. This will all lead into a Christmas outreach in December.

* Please pray that Japanese students will joyfully hear, receive, and believe the Gospel through these cultural exchanges.

* Pray that God will open many doors across East Asia and that people’s hearts will be turned to thoughts of giving thanks to the God of the universe.

* As joyful and valuable as these opportunities are, some missionaries will experience a deep sense of loss over the next few weeks--loss due to separation from family in the U.S., loss because they miss out on familiar traditions. Lift up those who are serving that they will experience an extra serving of God’s blessing.

A NOTE FROM THE PRAYER OFFICE: IMB will be closed on Thursday and Friday, November 28 and 29, to allow all staff to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday. PrayerLine will be distributed again on Monday, December 2. Give thanks to the Lord!

A NOTE FROM THE PRAYER OFFICE: IMB will be closed on Thursday and Friday, November 28 and 29, due to the Thanksgiving holiday, so “Today’s Prayer” will not be available on those days. Thank you.

Prayer requests on the website are updated every Monday-Friday at 9:30 a.m., EST

November 27, 2013

“All humanity will come to You, the One who hears prayer.” (Psalm 65:2)

WORLD LEADER - “Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence” (1 Timothy 2:1-2). Please pray today for Governor Eddie Calvo of Guam (island in North Pacific Ocean, east of the Philippines).

ATHLETES OF EAST ASIA - “November is a great month for us. There are no major national holidays, so we are able to spend more time with the student fellowship and athletes. One big annual event is our Thanksgiving celebration. We order turkey and make all the fixings. It is a great day for sharing an American tradition as well as the meaning behind the holiday. Please lift us up as we meet and share with students. May the Father open hearts and give us many opportunities to speak of the hope that we have in Jesus.”

LUSAKA, ZAMBIA (loo-SAH-kah) - “Join with us in praying for missionaries Mike and Lindy Howard as they retire from more than 20 years of service in Zambia. May the ripple effects of all the good works they began in Zambia continue to spread far and deep. Pray that the churches they planted and impacted throughout the Eastern province and Lusaka will thrive and prosper to the glory of God. God has used them tremendously to minister to the expatriate community throughout Lusaka. Pray that those ministries and the spirit of unity they have helped cultivate through the International Bible Study will thrive. The Chinese church, while a young work, continues to flow well and grow, ever ready to receive those newly arriving in Lusaka. Ask the Lord to richly bless the Howards for their hand in nursing the Chinese church from its infancy. May the women impacted by Lindy as she spent time with them at Lusaka’s compound beauty shops continue to seek God’s face and receive the nourishment only He can give. There’s so much more to tell of the Howards’ impact and how they will be missed! Countless missionary families are thriving and flourishing due to the shepherding and leadership they provided the mission family of Zambia over the years. As this chapter of their journey draws to completion, pray that our gracious Lord will help them to have ‘good goodbyes,’ and direct them in what He has next for them. May they know how much we care and will miss them.”

“Let the peoples praise you, God; let all the peoples praise you.” (Psalm 67:5)

WORLD LEADER - “Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence” (1 Timothy 2:1-2). Please pray today for Prime Minister Keith Mitchell of Grenada (island northeast of Venezuela, in the Caribbean).

HIJAZI SAUDI ARABS OF SAUDI ARABIA (hi-JAH-zee) - Many young Saudis are studying and living in the United States. One young man, Abe*, was blessed with an American neighbor, Uncle Jim*, who took him under his wing and helped him to adjust to life in America. Abe was welcomed into Uncle Jim’s home, included in family celebrations and events, and given advice and assistance on how to function in American society. Uncle Jim had a major influence on Abe’s life; in fact, conversations that others had with Abe always included frequent references to Uncle Jim. What if every Saudi in the United States had an “Uncle Jim”? What if Uncle Jim were a follower of Jesus? Pray for churches and believers in the U.S. to befriend and love Saudi students while they are in the States. (*pseudonyms)

SOUTH ASIANS OF CANADA - Praise the Lord for Life Eternal Asian Fellowship’s becoming a new church! It’s located in a Toronto suburb that is home to thousands of South Asians. Recently people from Kuwait, Afghanistan and China have attended. Please pray that the Holy Spirit will convict many so that they will repent, believe, and be baptized in faith in Jesus Christ. Ask the Father to give wisdom to the members as they plan a Christmas outreach. For Pastor R, please pray for his wife and children who are still in Pakistan. Petition for their safety, and ask for a favorable attitude of the embassy officials to approve their visa applications by year’s end.

“Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” (Colossians 3:16, NASB)

Hi, this is Eleanor Witcher of IMB’s prayer office, praying for true thankfulness.

Fall is the traditional time of harvest festivals. It’s the season for celebrating God’s bounty. But how can one harvest anything from something so dry, so dead, as a desert? And how can there even be a harvest when there has been no water? God is doing a new thing in the hearts of the desert peoples. There are White Moors and Black Moors, North African desert dwellers, who know and are proclaiming Jesus.

In western Zambia, “thanksgiving” has a different meaning. The New Apostolic Church is known as “the” church among the Lozi people. If you ask any Lozi, almost all will claim membership in the New Apostolic Church. Each year the New Apostolic Church celebrates a ceremony they call “Thanksgiving.” This is a special time for members to bring monetary offerings to the church as a way of giving thanks to God. That may sound like a good thing, but the New Apostolic Church is anything but good. They believe that modern-day apostles have been chosen by God and that the spoken word of these “holy” men overrides the words of Scripture. The church leaders tell the members not to bring their Bibles to church and that they will “tell them what they need to know.” When these new apostles visit rural churches, they are often allowed to choose a partner for the night from among the virgin girls in the community. The church teaches that even after one dies, their relatives can pay to have the deceased soul moved from hell to heaven.

* Please pray for the Lozi people that they will no longer be deceived by the New Apostolic Church but will turn in thanksgiving to the One True and Holy God.

* Intercede for Moor believers to remain faithful in proclaiming Jesus.

* Ask God to give you a thankful heart as you dwell in His Word.

“. . . the gospel is God’s power for salvation to everyone who believes . . .” (Romans 1:16)

WORLD LEADER - “Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence” (1 Timothy 2:1-2). Please pray today for Prime Minister Antonios Samaras of Greece (southern Europe, between Albania and Turkey).

AMAZON PEOPLES OF THE AMAZON RIVER BASIN (AM-uh-zahn) - Join the Amazon Peoples Team in thanking God for the open door that He has provided to teach chronological Bible storying to members of the Y and U indigenous communities. Pray that this door will remain open and that other members of these people groups will hear and respond to the Good News of Christ. In addition to continued prayers for the Y and U peoples, please pray for the R people and the T people. Pray that God will cause these people to seek after Him. God has given the Amazon Peoples Team several opportunities recently to have more contact with the R and T peoples. Pray that He will work in their hearts so that they will want to learn about Him through the storying sessions.

SENUFO SUPYIRE OF MALI (SIN-oo-fo su-PEER-ay) - “Over a year ago, we asked you to pray for MC, the brother of a young Senufo Supyire believer. This young man first expressed belief in Jesus Christ in 2011 just before we left for an extended time out of country. MC is currently going to the university in the capital city, but we have had a few good visits with him in the last few months. We have discussed with him the foundational beliefs of those who follow Christ and stressed the importance of being in a local church and being baptized. We were happy to hear that he has been attending church and reading his Bible. Please pray for MC to desire to follow the command to be baptized and to seek information about this process in his church in the capital city. Pray that the pastor and other leaders of that church will be helpful in discipling and leading this young believer in his desire to be baptized.”

“And I pray this: that your love will keep on growing in knowledge and every kind of discernment.” (Philippians 1:9, HCSB)

Hi, this is Eleanor Witcher of IMB’s prayer office, asking you to pray for believers who are new in their faith.

Workers among the Highland Singers of Central Asia share, “Daisy* is the mayor of the last village up in our valley, a very important woman in her area. Our non-profit organization has done several projects with her over the years. But more than that, she is very interested in Jesus. We have prayed with her, have passed on several films, and have even given her a Bible more than once. Her books disappear, as she loans them to family and friends, so we will be bringing her another one the next time we go.”

In the Last Frontier, the single mother of an elementary school-age student has accepted new life. She has been actively listening each week during her son’s English lesson, and the workers and their national partner were able to share Truth with her. “Because of my new life in Christ, I don’t feel alone anymore,” has been her testimony over the past few weeks.

A local church in the Eastern Hills and Sea Cities, East Asia, reserved an outdoor concert stage and hosted an event with the assistance of a young adults’ praise team from another city. In their own city, when the praise team had performed all the music, skits and evangelism methods they had prepared for a year, about 50 people came to the Lord. Give praise that another 50 received salvation when they performed in the second city.

* Please pray for the new believers in East Asia to grow well in His grace.

* Intercede for this single mother and her son to grow steadily as they participate in regular Bible study and make time in their schedule to attend worship.

* Lift up Daisy* and her family, asking that they will continue to pursue Truth and that workers will be bold and clear as we share with her and her village.

“Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts before Him. God is our refuge.” (Psalm 62:8)

WORLD LEADER - “Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence” (1 Timothy 2:1-2). Please pray today for Chief Minister Fabian Pocardo of Gibraltar (between Spain and Africa).

CHURCH PLANTING IN ZIMBABWE - Dr. M. and his wife, A., are long-term volunteers at Sanyati Baptist Hospital in Central Zimbabwe. Recently a widow came to see A. to ask for help for her niece, who was HIV-positive and had just given birth to a baby. Her niece was so ill that she was unable to eat or drink and had no milk for the baby. A. remembers, “Inside the dark hut, smelling of death, the mother lay on the floor. The grandmother sat nearby, holding the weakened baby.” They carried the emaciated mother to A.’s truck and transported her to the hospital. The mother received fluids and seemed to rally, asking about the baby who lay quietly at her side. Unfortunately, 12 hours later she passed away; her three children are now motherless and abandoned by their father. As tragic as this scenario is, it is played out in many villages and towns throughout Zimbabwe. Pray that God’s plan for marriage--abstinence before marriage and faithfulness to their partners after marriage--will become a way of life for Zimbabweans. “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly” (John 10:10, ESV).
http://www.zimbabweevangelismteam.blogspot.com/

PEOPLE OF FOUR CITIES BETWEEN TWO RIVERS, CHINA - Two believers made plans to meet brother W to form a new partnership in reaching a focus county. Well, the Lord had something else planned, as W needed help moving that day to another county’s factory dorm. As they finished moving, it was approaching lunchtime. Since they were in a new county, they didn’t know where anything was. They met a security guard as they went out the factory gate, so they said, ‘‘Excuse me, but are there any good restaurants out here?” They got directions and then they found themselves on a road full of restaurants, just blending together. But one sign stood out to the three of them: The Gospel Restaurant. They wondered if the owners were believers too. “Let’s eat there and find out.” It turned out that they were a whole family of believers--generations worth! What a rare find! In this new county, there are no known churches. It has 20 factories and tens of thousands of people yet to hear the Gospel. The owners were open to and excited about the idea of having training sessions held in their restaurant. Pray for wisdom, understanding, protection, compassion and love as plans are made to reach this county.

November 21, 2013

“Hear my cry, O God; attend to my prayer. From the end of the earth I will cry to You.” (Psalm 61:1-2a)

WORLD LEADER - “Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence” (1 Timothy 2:1-2). Please pray today for President John Dramani Mahama of Ghana (western Africa, between Cote d’Ivoire and Togo).

ANTANKARANA OF MADAGASCAR (ahn-tahn-CAR-ah-nah) - There is no church of any kind in the large village of Irodana--at least not yet. This coastal village in the far northeastern part of Madagascar is made up of fishermen and farmers. Deeply tied to Islam and ancestor worship, these people have a great need for the life-saving truth of God’s Word. This village is unreached with the Gospel mainly because it is physically difficult to reach. Pray for missionaries Michael and Michelle Allen as they begin teaching in this new area, and ask for the people of Irodana to be convicted of their desperate need for Jesus Christ. May a reproducing, Bible-centered, Christ-led church be started in Irodana.

LAST FRONTIER - She loved learning English and committed to weekly meetings. Mrs. H heard about the Creator through “Creation to Christ” and many other stories. She kept searching for peace, but could not find it . . . peace eluded her. Recently a worker received an e-mail with the news of her father’s death. It crushed the worker’s heart, knowing that her father had not said yes to the Most High God. Upon returning to the city, the worker immediately visited Mrs. H’s home. Again, Mrs. H wanted to hear a story, hoping it would bring peace. The worker gently wiped the tears from Mrs. H’s eyes and said, “You don’t need a story. You need a Savior.” As the worker prayed for the Spirit to work in Mrs. H’s heart, there seemed to be an understanding of the words shared as never before. “Peace I leave with you. My peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” (John 14:27, NIV). Pray for the Word to penetrate hearts. Pray for Mrs. H and her family to experience this peace by turning to the Most High God. Ask the Spirit to break through their fears of abandoning ancestor worship and draw them to Jesus.
