“Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” (Colossians 3:16, NASB)

Hi, this is Eleanor Witcher of IMB’s prayer office, praying for true thankfulness.

Fall is the traditional time of harvest festivals. It’s the season for celebrating God’s bounty. But how can one harvest anything from something so dry, so dead, as a desert? And how can there even be a harvest when there has been no water? God is doing a new thing in the hearts of the desert peoples. There are White Moors and Black Moors, North African desert dwellers, who know and are proclaiming Jesus.

In western Zambia, “thanksgiving” has a different meaning. The New Apostolic Church is known as “the” church among the Lozi people. If you ask any Lozi, almost all will claim membership in the New Apostolic Church. Each year the New Apostolic Church celebrates a ceremony they call “Thanksgiving.” This is a special time for members to bring monetary offerings to the church as a way of giving thanks to God. That may sound like a good thing, but the New Apostolic Church is anything but good. They believe that modern-day apostles have been chosen by God and that the spoken word of these “holy” men overrides the words of Scripture. The church leaders tell the members not to bring their Bibles to church and that they will “tell them what they need to know.” When these new apostles visit rural churches, they are often allowed to choose a partner for the night from among the virgin girls in the community. The church teaches that even after one dies, their relatives can pay to have the deceased soul moved from hell to heaven.

* Please pray for the Lozi people that they will no longer be deceived by the New Apostolic Church but will turn in thanksgiving to the One True and Holy God.

* Intercede for Moor believers to remain faithful in proclaiming Jesus.

* Ask God to give you a thankful heart as you dwell in His Word.
