“Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep.” (Romans 12:14, NKJV)

Hi, this is Eleanor Witcher of IMB’s prayer office, joining you in prayer.

On Sunday as I sat in morning worship, I rejoiced with several families while their children were baptized. We celebrated the new life each represented and prayed for the impact they will have in Christ’s Kingdom. It was appropriate to rejoice.

And on Sunday afternoon as I watched the news coming out of the Philippines, I wept with those families whose children were washed away with Typhoon Haiyan. We recognize each precious life represented through the images viewed and pray that they had had the opportunity, at some point in their lives, to hear the Good News of Christ’s Kingdom. It is appropriate to weep.

Our missionaries are safely accounted for and actively assessing communities for relief efforts as well as providing an initial response. The swift involvement is possible because personnel were already living in the area. In this state of national calamity, all forms of assistance are needed; but a well-formed plan is essential to getting supplies to the bereaved and homeless in a timely manner. Leadership needs wisdom and discernment as they make decisions covering an assortment of details.

Even now, the resilient Filipino people are taking faltering steps to rebuild their homes and cope with the losses surrounding them. This is a time that calls for courage and determination. Emergency relief efforts will last for weeks; but there are many national believers who will stay to demonstrate the love of Christ for years to come. May they have the fortitude and grace necessary. Urgent efforts must be exhausted in burying the dead and protecting any available water supplies.

* Please pray for communication to be re-established soon and roads to be opened on Leyte and Samar.

* Intercede for those who mourn the sudden loss of loved ones, that they will be comforted.

* Pray for the Lord’s strength, comfort, and peace for personnel and Filipinos partners who were in the areas hit by the typhoon.
