“For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him.” (2 Chronicles 16:9a, NKJV)

WORLD LEADER - “Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence” (1 Timothy 2:1-2). Please pray today for President Pierre Nkurunziza of Burundi (central Africa, east of Democratic Republic of the Congo).

JOLA-FONYI OF SENEGAL AND THE GAMBIA (JOH-luh-FOH-nyee) - “Thank you for praying for rain for the Casamance region of Senegal. Praise God that in answer to your prayers, we have received enough rain for the animals to have green things to eat and for the farmers to plant some crops! But we are still way behind in the total amount of rain needed. There is no water in the rice fields. We normally receive large amounts of rain two or three times a week, and that is not happening. Please continue to ask God to send enough rain to meet the needs of the people, and pray that the people will know that it’s from the true and living God.”

PEOPLE OF NORTH JAPAN - The city of Sendai (pronounced sen-dye) and the towns of Kamaishi (kah-mah-ee-shee) and Otsuchi (oh-tsoo-chee) in Japan were greatly affected by the March 11, 2011, earthquake and tsunami. Sendai is the largest city in northern Japan, with a population of approximately 1 million. Close to both the sea and the mountains, it is a comfortable, pleasant city and is considered to be a nice place to live. The main avenues around the city are wide and tree-lined, giving Sendai an almost European feel. Northeast of Sendai, the towns of Kamaishi (population: 40,000) and Otsuchi (population: 11,000) are both active in commercial fishing and shellfish production. The earthquake and tsunami wiped out most of their coastal businesses and homes. Yet in Kamaishi, no more than five school-age children were lost in the tsunami, in what is known locally as the “Kamaishi Miracle.” Immediately after the earthquake struck, the students of one school evacuated to higher ground; this had a ripple effect, as the other schools followed suit, as did many of the local residents. Their prompt response saved lives when the tsunami hit. A new “Kamaishi Miracle” is needed in which many lives will be saved for eternity. Perhaps the children will lead the way again! Please pray for the salvation of the people of North Japan.

“You rejoice in this, though now for a short time you have had to struggle in various trials so that the genuineness of your faith—more valuable than gold, which perishes though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” (1 Peter 1:6-7, HCSB)

Hi, this is Eleanor Witcher of IMB’s prayer office, joining you in prayer for those persecuted for their faith.

A Moroccan country girl goes to the city for the summer. Of her own free will, Samira* is tirelessly helping needy family members, from the elderly and sick to the young and helpless. Initially she had some freedom, but now she is not allowed to visit with friends or other family members because she has been openly sharing her testimony. Samira is a believer; her family members are not. Samira loves Jesus; her family respects Him as a prophet.

Each religion in the island country of Sri Lanka, including Christianity, is viewed as a matter of family inheritance. Less than 2 percent of Sri Lankans believe that salvation comes through personal faith in Christ alone. To be Sinhalese is to be Buddhist. To be Tamil is to be Hindu. To be Moor is to be Muslim. Catholic Christians inherited their religion from generations before them who converted for Portuguese protection. Evangelical Christians also inherited their religion from the British colonial days. In this environment, tolerance is seen as a virtue; the government honors all religious holidays, giving Sri Lankans more national holidays than any other country in the world. However, tolerance extends only to those who stay within the bounds of their particular religion and who refrain from proselytizing. In recent days, as the small evangelical church has extended its witness to the lost around them, the repercussions have been violent. Churches have been vandalized and believers attacked.

* Please pray for boldness for believers that they may be salt and light in Sri Lanka.

* Pray for free time for Samira so that she can be refreshed and encouraged by her believing friends and other family members.

* Ask God to provide you wisdom and grace whenever you are faced with intolerance.

“What man among you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!” (Matthew 7:9-11, HCSB)

WORLD LEADER - “Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence” (1 Timothy 2:1-2). Please pray today for Prime Minister Luc-Adolphe Tiao of Burkina Faso (western Africa, north of Ghana).

AFGHANISTAN - Pray for Afghan believers who are being persecuted. Pray that by the strength of the Holy Spirit, they will stand strong. Pray for those who are being mocked and beaten by their families, asking that they will have boldness and not be crushed under the weight of distress. Pray that the Lord Jesus will minister to these and that they will be strengthened to endure the attacks. Pray that they will be assured that they are standing for Truth.

MARSEILLE, FRANCE (mar-SAY) - “We, as a team, are in the midst of planting a church in our neighborhood,” writes a member of Team Marseille. “We have a core group of people coming to our meetings (Brunch and Bible) but few, if any, of those who attend are actually believers. This month, we are going to start looking at what it means to be a Christian. Ask the Holy Spirit to convict those who are coming so that they will give their lives to Jesus.”

‘Surrender and abide,’ Platt challenges Brook Hills
God was doing an “unusual work” in David Platt’s life when, on a mission trip, he heard the dizzying news that Tom Elliff was retiring as president of IMB. What Platt hadn’t realized yet was that God was continuing the journey that would lead to Platt’s election as IMB president. With “deep resolve,” Platt said his desire to follow God trumps all else. Pray for Platt as he steps up the same challenge he left with the church he has pastored for eight years: surrender to Christ and abide in Him,

N. Iraq: Forcibly displaced Christians receive life-saving supplies
Persecuted Christians in Iraq fear they are facing extinction. Abraham Shepherd, who leads Baptist Global Response (BGR) work in the Middle East, promised to make their story known. Southern Baptist donations are helping families in this ancient Christian community who have gone for three weeks with little to eat after fleeing their homes. Yet more is needed: Give today to provide relief.

'Chaser of darkness'
Tom Elliff will be remembered for his boundless energy and a passion for prayer - and a heart broken for the lost. During his years as president of IMB, he initiated a number of new opportunities for churches and individuals to serve and pray for the nations – as “chasers of darkness,” a reference Elliff often uses for those who “take the Light to the ends of the earth.”

WorldView: Bad news, Good news
Violence and hatred rage everywhere. Wars, skirmishes and suffering flare up where we don’t expect them, and where we do. Ukraine and Russia. Syria. Iraq. Israel and Gaza. West Africa.  Most people tune it out – except those in touch with the mind and heart of God. Those who seek to follow Him know it’s not who we are; it’s who He is. It’s only His love, through His Spirit, that changes a broken world.

“Yours, LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the splendor and the majesty, for everything in the heavens and on earth belongs to You. Yours, LORD, is the kingdom, and You are exalted as head over all.” (1 Chronicles 29:11, HCSB)

WORLD LEADER - “Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence” (1 Timothy 2:1-2). Please pray today for Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski of Bulgaria (southeastern Europe).

ATHLETES OF EAST ASIA - “We will be taking a group of students from a university to a nearby tourist area for a weekend hiking trip. Most of these students are nonbelievers. An American friend will be coming to lead several sessions on relationships. Please pray for open hearts to hear and receive the message and for relationships to develop with the Christian students who will be participating. Also, two members of our ministry team will be traveling to the Asian Games that will begin in mid-September. Please pray that they will be able to share with many professional athletes the truth that hope in sports is short lived, but trust in the Lord is eternal.”

HO CHI MINH CITY, VIETNAM (HOE-chee-men) - The traditional story of Cuoi is central to the celebration every year of the Mid-Autumn Festival in Viet Nam. This year, it will be celebrated on September 8. As the story is told, Cuoi’s wife offended a sacred tree, and as a result, Cuoi was transported to the moon and trapped there as punishment. For the holiday, people will make and purchase lanterns to display in an effort to light the way for Cuoi to be able to return to earth. The story itself provides a wonderful bridge to the Gospel, as believers in the city have the opportunity to share with their family and friends about sin and punishment and a path to redemption. Pray for evangelistic activities this month as believers share about the true Light of the world in Jesus Christ and how they can follow His Light to forgiveness and into the family of God.

“The Dayspring from on high has visited us; To give light to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, To guide our feet into the way of peace.” (Luke 1:78b-79, NKJV)

Hi, this is Eleanor Witcher of IMB’s prayer office, asking you to join Christians worldwide in praying for Afghanistan.

Afghanistan, a country torn by war and tribal warfare, desperately needs God’s mercy. No one is exempt from a daily threat of death. Some Afghans are targets of planned military attacks; others are simply trying to pick up their children from school. The fear deadens into a dull lethargy, but it never goes away.

There are over two million orphans in Afghanistan. They need safe homes, food, care and education and protection against predators. Afghan women also long to be under someone’s protection and love. They hope for healthy pregnancies and babies and for their children to receive a good education. Longing for deep relationships, Afghan women want peace in their land, but more urgently, peace in their homes.

There are many broken families and scars from years of war. Families need Christ’s mercy for themselves and to learn to reflect that mercy with each other. Ask God to draw fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts and cousins to Himself, so that networks of extended family members can worship together and encourage one another in the faith. The Word of God is available through Christian radio and television, and through the lives of other believers.

There are many Afghan believers who are being persecuted. They are mocked and beaten by their families, but they want to be bold and not crushed under the weight of distress.

* Please pray that the Lord Jesus would minister to these and that they would be strengthened to endure the attacks.

* Pray for God to be a Father to the fatherless—that He would bring messengers of hope who would tell these children about the Jesus who understands their suffering.

* Pray for the salvation of influential leaders in Afghanistan, asking that they come to understand and accept Jesus’ identity as the Son of God and that they repent, believe and submit to his Lordship in their lives.

**Follow the Central Asian Peoples Facebook (www.Facebook.com/CentralAsianPeoples) and Twitter account (Pray4CA) for more requests about Afghanistan.**

“Everyone who asks receives, and the one who searches finds, and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” (Matthew 7:8, HCSB)

WORLD LEADER - “Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence” (1 Timothy 2:1-2). Please pray today for Prime Minister Sir Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei (southeastern Asia, bordering the South China Sea and Malaysia).

GUJARATI OF INDIA (goo-juh-RAH-tee) - Once again, the festival season has begun in Gujarat. It began with a 10-day celebration honoring the god Ganesh. People have brought giant idols of Ganesh into their homes. They will worship him for 10 days, and then they will carry him in procession to the nearest large body of water. This celebration began on August 29 and will continue through September 8. September’s end will see nine days of celebration known as Navratri (September 25 through October 3). During this time, people will dance far into the night, worshiping the goddesses of the harvest. The entire state of Gujarat will be very involved in these celebrations and worship of their gods. Please pray for the Light to shine in the state of Gujarat during this dark month. Ask the Holy Spirit to break the hold of evil over this place. Pray for believers to stand firm and bold before their neighbors and families. Pray for churches and workers here who will be conducting alternative celebrations during this time.
http://prayforgujarat.wordpress.com/

SUB-SAHARAN AFRICAN PEOPLES - Violent persecution and radical religious groups are just a couple of the obstacles that believers face in one country of the Central Sahel Cluster. Christian leaders travel to preach, disciple, and encourage fellowship groups. The work can be discouraging and even dangerous. Early this month, there will be a meeting for these Christian leaders. Please pray that Bible study, leadership development, and the encouragement of meeting with others of like faith will refresh these men and prepare them to stay the course and to finish the race. Pray for the hundreds of fellowship groups that are affected by these leaders, asking that they will grow in number and in faith.

September 2, 2014

“Tell to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and His strength and His wondrous works that He has done.” (Psalm 78:4b)

WORLD LEADER - “Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence” (1 Timothy 2:1-2). Please pray today for Premier D. Otlando Smith of British Virgin Islands (northeastern West Indies).

Prayer requests from Eddie W. Cox, director of IMB’s Office of Global Prayer Strategy, to “Today’s Prayer” intercessors:

Thank you for clicking through to “Today’s Prayer” and praying with me.

As we begin this month, I’m asking you to intercede for David Platt, IMB’s new president. Please take the time to read through the following article and then to pray as the Holy Spirit prompts you in light of what you will have read. These are key days for our new president, and he and his family desperately need your prayers.

ROCKVILLE, Va.--David Platt, one of the most passionate and influential voices for missions among evangelicals, was elected president of the Southern Baptist International Mission Board Aug. 27 by board trustees, meeting at the IMB’s International Learning Center in Rockville, Virginia.

Platt, 36, pastor of The Church at Brook Hills, a Southern Baptist congregation in Birmingham, Alabama, will take office effective immediately as president of the 169-year-old organization, the largest denominational missionary-sending body among American evangelicals. More than 4,800 Southern Baptist international missionaries serve worldwide.

Platt succeeds former missionary, pastor and Southern Baptist Convention president Tom Elliff, 70, who has served as IMB president since March 2011. Elliff asked the agency’s trustees earlier this year to begin an active search for his successor. Elliff and his wife, Jeannie, plan to return to their home state, Oklahoma.

The author of the bestselling books “Radical” and “Follow Me,” among others, Platt has been pastor of The Church at Brook Hills, which counts about 4,500 members, since 2006. He also founded and leads Radical, a ministry that exists to serve the church in accomplishing the mission of Christ. Radical provides resources that support disciple-making in local churches worldwide, organizing events and facilitating opportunities through multiple avenues, all aimed at encouraging followers of Christ in God’s global purposes. Platt has traveled extensively to teach the Bible alongside church leaders and missionaries throughout the United States and around the world. He and his wife, Heather, have four children: Caleb, Joshua, Mara Ruth and Isaiah.
CLEAR CALLING

“We talk all the time at Brook Hills about laying down a blank check with our lives before God, with no strings attached, willing to go wherever He leads, give whatever He asks and do whatever He commands in order to make His glory known among the nations,” Platt said in a letter to his church, released Aug. 27. “Over these past months, God has made it abundantly clear to both Heather and me that He is filling in that blank check in our lives and family with a different assignment. Along the way, God has used the elders of our church to affirm His call, and today He used the leadership of the IMB to confirm it.”

In an interview, Platt said that God had done a unique work in his life over the past 12 to 18 months--particularly since an overseas journey during which he saw a stark representation of just how many people have never heard the name of Jesus.

“This is not something I saw coming,” he said. “I love pastoring The Church at Brook Hills. I love shepherding this local church on mission for the glory of God among the nations and could picture myself doing that for decades to come. At the same time, God has been doing an unusual work in my heart and life. The only way I can describe it is that He’s been instilling in me a deeper, narrowing, Romans 15 kind of ambition, where [the Apostle] Paul said, ‘I want to see Christ preached where He has not been named.’ . . . He has given me a deeper desire to spend more of my time and energy and resources in the short life He has given me to seeing Christ preached where He’s not been named. The concept of unreached peoples--of nearly 2 billion people who have never heard the Gospel--is just totally intolerable.”

During a February trip to Nepal, Platt recounted, his team trekked for five days before they encountered a single follower of Christ. He also witnessed Hindu families burning the bodies of newly deceased loved ones and scattering their ashes over a sacred river in hopes that they would be reincarnated. Most if not all of them presumably had died without ever hearing of Christ.

“It just gripped me in a deeper way,” Platt said. “I came back with a desire to say, ‘How can my life more intentionally be used to get the Gospel to unreached peoples? Maybe I need to move overseas.’ Then the [trustee] search team contacted me and said, ‘Would you be willing to consider [becoming IMB president]?’ And I’m sitting there thinking, ‘Why would I be willing to consider moving overseas, but not be willing to consider mobilizing thousands of people in a more intentional way to do that?’

“The Lord has made it so clear, clearer than just about anything else I’ve ever done in my life. I told my wife the only thing I can compare it to is asking her to marry me.”

PASSION FOR LOSTNESS, NEW GENERATION

Platt’s passion for people lost without Christ--and his calling to reach them--inspired members of the IMB trustee search committee, according to trustee and search committee chairman David Uth, pastor of First Baptist Church of Orlando, Florida.

“When we realized his sense of call, whether that meant serving as IMB president or going himself . . . we realized how passionate, how deeply committed and called he was to the nations,” Uth said in an interview. “That began for us a new season of discussions with him--and I will add, too, with his wife. The picture we saw of them was a beautiful picture of a one-flesh marriage moving together, following the same call. We sensed as much call in Heather as we did David. . . . One more thing that really was consuming for us: his passion for lostness. To bring back passion for lostness within the context of Southern Baptist life would be so refreshing. I think it would be a [denominational] rebirth.”

Uth said the trustees are excited about Platt’s influence among thousands of Southern Baptists and other evangelical leaders through The Church at Brook Hills, the Radical network and other arenas.
“We weren’t looking for a man who knew how to talk about it; we were looking for a man who was doing it--and using the influence he had to affect the nations,” Uth said. “When we considered what Brook Hills was doing to send couples [to the mission field] and to engage people in the pew in kingdom work, we felt like those were clues to how effective he was at mobilizing and getting people to follow the vision that God had given him.”

The ongoing crisis in financial support for missionaries is a major issue for Southern Baptists and IMB leadership, Uth acknowledged, and will challenge Platt as it has challenged Elliff during his tenure. But the potential of young, God-called missionaries in an emerging generation is far greater.

“I think the missionary force, the young people God is calling . . . represent one of the greatest forces in Christian history right now,” Uth stressed. “While the world is becoming more hostile and anti-Christian in some places, it’s as if [young missionaries’] passion is growing equally to go to those hard places. That’s where we hear young couples saying they want to go, that they want to be radically obedient to what God has called us to do for the nations. The passion is there. How do we equip them and resource them? How do we incorporate strategy that’s effective? David is going to address that in a way that’s going to bring maximum impact.”

Platt particularly hopes to use his influence to multiply the involvement of local Southern Baptist churches for missions in a way that glorifies God and His Word.

“I want to see the IMB, first and foremost, exalting Christ as the center of the church and mission,” Platt said. “He’s the One who’s going to accomplish the Great Commission. He’s given us the joy of being involved with Him in it. That means in everything the IMB does, we’ve got to be in tune with His Word, His plan, His Spirit, reflecting His character. I want to take whatever influence the Lord has given me, and will give me in this position, to sound the trumpet among followers of Christ--Southern Baptists and non-Southern Baptists--to say missions is not a compartmentalized program. The local church is the agent God has promised to bless for the spread of the Gospel to the nations. The role of the IMB is to equip and empower and encourage the local church to do this.”

May God’s blessings flow . . .

Thank you for taking time out of your busy day to pray for David and his family. Your prayers make a difference!!!

Most sincerely,

Eddie W. Cox, director
IMB’s Office of Global Prayer Strategy
