“The Dayspring from on high has visited us; To give light to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, To guide our feet into the way of peace.” (Luke 1:78b-79, NKJV)

Hi, this is Eleanor Witcher of IMB’s prayer office, asking you to join Christians worldwide in praying for Afghanistan.

Afghanistan, a country torn by war and tribal warfare, desperately needs God’s mercy. No one is exempt from a daily threat of death. Some Afghans are targets of planned military attacks; others are simply trying to pick up their children from school. The fear deadens into a dull lethargy, but it never goes away.

There are over two million orphans in Afghanistan. They need safe homes, food, care and education and protection against predators. Afghan women also long to be under someone’s protection and love. They hope for healthy pregnancies and babies and for their children to receive a good education. Longing for deep relationships, Afghan women want peace in their land, but more urgently, peace in their homes.

There are many broken families and scars from years of war. Families need Christ’s mercy for themselves and to learn to reflect that mercy with each other. Ask God to draw fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts and cousins to Himself, so that networks of extended family members can worship together and encourage one another in the faith. The Word of God is available through Christian radio and television, and through the lives of other believers.

There are many Afghan believers who are being persecuted. They are mocked and beaten by their families, but they want to be bold and not crushed under the weight of distress.

* Please pray that the Lord Jesus would minister to these and that they would be strengthened to endure the attacks.

* Pray for God to be a Father to the fatherless—that He would bring messengers of hope who would tell these children about the Jesus who understands their suffering.

* Pray for the salvation of influential leaders in Afghanistan, asking that they come to understand and accept Jesus’ identity as the Son of God and that they repent, believe and submit to his Lordship in their lives.
