“She will give birth to a son, and you are to name Him Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:21, HCSB)

Hi, this is Eleanor Witcher of IMB’s prayer office, kneeling with you in prayer for East Asian peoples.

In a country that was not founded on biblical principles, many Christians find it difficult to get a gospel conversation started because it is so out of context and thought to be unrelated to Japanese daily life. Although Christmas is mainly commercially motivated in Japan, it is a season when speaking about its true meaning is much easier than at any other time of the year. Missionaries seize this opportunity by Christmas caroling on the streets, distributing Christmas cookies with tracts, having Christmas parties for children, and doing other kinds of Christmas-related activities.

Christmas is not celebrated by Mongolian people except for those who are Christians, and it has only been in recent years that others have really taken notice of it. Many traditions were brought from Russia during Soviet times and were re-purposed to avoid an emphasis on anything “religious.” So there are New Year’s trees, gifts and Old Man Winter instead of Christmas trees, Christmas gifts and Santa Claus. For the past four years, groups of visiting believers have come to Mongolia over their Christmas break to share the true meaning from the Bible with Mongolian people. This year, a group of young people will brave the cold of Mongolia to bring the Light of Jesus. They will spend their time sharing in schools and other settings.

* Please pray that God will open the doors for ministry and give these young people favor in the eyes of those whom He brings to them in order that they may share the gospel.

* Intercede for the missionaries, volunteers, and national partners in Osaka, Japan as they share the true reason for the season again at this time of the year.

* Bow in humility before the manger, expressing praise for the salvation from sin brought through the birth of Jesus Christ.
