In response to that old, very offensive joke “So, do you still beat your wife?” a believer gasped when the Bambara friend replied, “No, not anymore.” The conversation went like this, “Did you really ever beat your beautiful, sweet wife?” “Yes, many times!” was the shocking reply. “What did she do that made you beat her?” “Nothing much,” he said. “I was just mad about something else, or maybe she said something I didn’t like. In my culture, it is expected that a man will beat his wife. This is what I grew up with. I saw it so much as a child. I thought that is what a man has to do, and it made me feel powerful.” “What made you stop?” the believer asked. “Someone gave me a Bible, and I read it from cover to cover. When I finished, I knew that this was truly God’s Word, and I understood what I needed to do to follow Jesus. I also knew how He wants me to live. Now I read some in it every day and I thank God that my wife still loves me and that she follows ‘the Jesus Road’ too.” Life for girls is not easy in the Hadramaut of Yemen. They grow up quickly, as many are tasked with helping in the home or, if they are country girls, in the fields. Some go to school, but not all. Many marry young--some as young as age 12 or 13. Most are married before their teenage years end. Babies come quickly, and life continues. Few have ever heard the Gospel. * Please pray that girls will hear the Good News on television, through the Internet, and through radio shows and respond in obedience to Jesus. * Intercede for the wives of Mali, where it is legal and expected that a man beat his wife. * Ask God to open your eyes to those around you who may be suffering abuse or hardship in their marriage and be His heart of compassion to them. |
