Outside most Northern Khmer homes in Thailand is a small altar that may look, to some, like a dollhouse. Many are used to give offerings for the ancestors and others for the territorial spirits believed to inhabit the property. The significance of these altars has been driven home to Northern Khmer Team members as they sought a new house to rent. First, nearly every house has such an altar. Secondly, as they have asked about the possibility of removing the altars, the owners have expressed their fear of what the spirits would do to them. One woman was afraid that she would be cursed and die. Large sums of money are spent, sometimes more than the value of the home, to conduct elaborate ceremonies establishing these altars as places to worship and appease the spirits. To remove these small pieces of concrete, even larger ceremonies must be performed and large gifts of money given to appease the spirits and seek their permission to remove the altars. Strongholds of Satan and spiritual bondage to the traditions of family idol worship are all around you in Nepal. But amid such darkness, light has come. One adult believer, who was alone in his belief as the youngest son of a fatherless Hindu family, has been living out his faith among his family for the past three years. Recently his older sister repented, began following Christ, and was baptized. When she returned home, she and her brother--with their mother’s permission--broke the family idol. * Please pray for his whole family in Nepal to become strong believers who will share the Truth. * Intercede for the Northern Khmer people that they will come to fear the true God and learn of His love and mercy. * Ask the Lord to reveal to you any idols in your own life and to give you the righteous determination to destroy them.
