“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” (John 10:27, NKJV)

Hi, this is Eleanor Witcher of IMB’s prayer office, encouraging you to pray for Africa.

Several sources note that Africa is undergoing the most rapid urbanization in the world. As the transition from an agrarian society to the Industrial Revolution occurred at the turn of the last century in the Northern Hemisphere, so is urbanization and the revolution of the information age today necessitating changes to what a missionary must do and be to make disciples in the global south, in Africa. The urban environment is challenging in ways different from the African bush.

The Akasalem (or Chamba) people are scattered in numerous West African countries, with a concentrated presence of 17,000 in Togo. Originally believing in a superhuman controlling power, they’ve submitted to Islam, but in some African countries, there are reports of those believing in Christ. In Togo, they are classified as an “unengaged” people. There is no known person or evangelical entity that is purposefully evangelizing and planting churches among them.

“Oh those people . . . they live in the mountains.” The Vidunda (pronounced VEE-dune-dah) are seen as backward, and people are usually indifferent towards them. Because of this attitude and the fact that there are no roads to their villages, people generally turn a blind eye to the Vidunda. Journeying out of the mountains to sell her goods, a Vidunda woman is greeted by a missionary in the market. Upon hearing the greeting, she leaps over the piles of bananas she is selling, dancing on the path with excitement. “This one knows my language!” she exclaims.

* Please pray that this woman will be the “person of peace” (Luke 10:6) who is able to open doors into the Vidunda community.

* Pray that God will raise up a witness of Christ among the Akasalem people, and that He will also call out a church from the United States to engage them.

* Plead for a Great Awakening in cities like Lusaka, Zambia that will launch believers to be witnesses to the uttermost parts of Africa and beyond.
