“The effectual, fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” (James 5:16b, KJV)

Hi, this is Eleanor Witcher of IMB’s prayer office, asking you to pray for the prayer office staff and others attending this month’s School of Prayer for All Nations.

As you know, we have recently launched the School of Prayer with a desire to encourage Southern Baptists in this rich discipline of the Christian faith. We are excited to guide participants through various prayer experiences and to learn from those who travel to Richmond. God has spoken to our hearts, drawing us closer to Him and developing a deeper passion for the nations.

But up to this point, our broader prayer office staff has not had the opportunity to “participate” as a group and simply sit in the presence of the Father. From January 27-31, we will step away from the office and invest ourselves in the School of Prayer, being still to know that He is God.

This experiential school is not designed to teach a new method or program. It is a time of inspiration and equipping, a time with God and others as pray for ourselves and our loved ones, for an awakening among the churches of America, and the spread of the Gospel to the nations. IMB president Tom Elliff has said, “It is unthinkable that we would send thousands of people overseas without covering them with a blast furnace of prayer.” The nations, and those Christians who have committed to reaching them with the Gospel, need our committed, fervent prayer. Thank you for being a people of prayer who consistently educate yourselves and lift up the needs of people groups around the world.

* Please pray for prayer office staff members that we will hear the truths God has in mind for us, in our personal lives as well as our combined office responsibilities.

* Intercede for the entire group attending that we will blend well and respect each others’ spiritual insight.

* Give thanks to our God who gives us the privilege of prayer and answers in life-changing power.

To learn more about the School of Prayer for All Nations, visit http://imb.org/span.
***Allowing us to be focused fully on the Lord, the prayer office is closed for business this week. The next PrayerLine will be distributed on Monday, February 3. Thank you for your understanding.***

A NOTE FROM THE PRAYER OFFICE: On Tuesday through Friday, January 28-31, our office staff will be attending the School of Prayer for All Nations at the International Learning Center in Rockville, Va. Therefore, “Today’s Prayer” will not be available on those days. Please intercede for us as we participate in this experiential school of prayer.

“All the nations You have made will come and bow down before You, Lord, and will honor Your name. “ (Psalm 86:9)

WORLD LEADERS - “Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence” (1 Timothy 2:1-2). Please pray today for Prime Minister Thomas Motsoahae Thabane of Lesotho (southeastern South Africa).

NORTHERN YEMENI ARABS OF YEMEN (YEH-muh-nee) - In the 5th century, thousands of followers of Jesus (the first strong Christian presence in southern Arabia) in the northern Yemeni town of Najran were martyred. Najran, as a bustling Christian beacon in the Arabian Peninsula, faded into history, but according to one Yemeni brother, its light has never been extinguished in God’s eyes. This brother draws hope from the Najranite sacrifices and identifies strongly with their persecution. He insists that he is a spiritual descendant of the Najranites and that soon there will be many more filling Yemen and the whole Arabian Peninsula. Pray that he is right and that the blood of the Najranites becomes the seed of the Yemeni church!

SUB-SAHARAN AFRICAN UNENGAGED PEOPLES - In Angola, there are faces of those for whom life is not working at all, those who have become frustrated and discouraged by their repeated problems in life. Some are so discouraged that they question whether even God can really help them. Bad decisions follow bad decisions, with no way to avoid the consequences, resulting in a helplessness to escape their current problems and lifestyles. They struggle with life-destroying habits, manipulative and even abusive relationships, and a sense of hopelessness in ever getting beyond their current plight. They need to know about one who gives new beginnings and who can break the chains that hold us back. They need stability and long-term hope by way of a relationship with our Lord, a relationship that won’t disappoint. Can these people be reached? Of course they can! Please pray for the chains that are keeping people in Angola from Christ and trust in Him to be broken.

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is God’s power for salvation to everyone who believes, first to the Jew, and also to the Greek.” (Romans 1:16, HCSB)

Hi, this is Eleanor Witcher of IMB’s prayer office, asking you to pray for those celebrating Lunar New Year.

The Lunar New Year or Tet holiday is the most important time of the year for the people of Vietnam. The first day of Tet is on January 31 this year, but the traditions and celebrations have already started and the official holiday will continue until February 5. Families come together during this time, and the successful observance of the holiday is seen as an indicator of the success of the coming year. Traditions center around acquiring luck, sacrificing to gods who are believed to have authority over the household, visiting temples, and sacrificing to ancestors.

Chinese and Koreans are now saying, “It’s the most wonderful time of the year!” Within China, regional customs and traditions concerning the holiday vary widely. Often, the evening preceding Chinese New Year’s Day, families gather for an annual reunion dinner. It’s also traditional for every family to cleanse the house thoroughly, in order to sweep away any ill-fortune and to make way for incoming good luck. Windows and doors are decorated with red paper-cuts and couplets with popular themes of “good fortune,” “happiness”, “wealth” or “longevity.” Other activities include lighting firecrackers and giving money in red envelopes. Churches and groups of believers throughout the city will be reaching out to their friends, family and co-workers, telling about the great gift of salvation in Jesus. Some will be taking the message of Christ home to towns and villages as they leave the city to reunite with family.

* Please pray that family members will be receptive and not reject the message shared.

* Intercede for those in Vietnam, China, and Korea who were first exposed to the Gospel through the Christmas season to recall the Good News and seek Jesus.

* Ask God to strengthen believers that they will not be ashamed of the Gospel but proclaim God’s Word faithfully.

“[God] is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us.” (Ephesians 3:20)

Please pray today for Prime Minister Najib Miqati of Lebanon (eastern Mediterranean).

EUROPEAN PEOPLES - The European peoples affinity group has been challenged by their leader to sow 1 million Gospel seeds by 2020. Counting from January 1, 2014, there are about 2,200 days until the end of the decade. This number, if multiplied by 500 workers, equals more than 1 million. Intercede that Baptist representatives serving among Europeans will consciously seek to sow a seed, or better yet, to share the Gospel daily. Petition that this will become natural for every worker in the affinity. Pray that these Gospel seeds will fall on good soil this year and produce an abundant harvest.

LAST FRONTIER - In one city with a minority Muslim population, because of the threat of more terror attacks, the local authorities have been carefully monitoring every Muslim student. Thus, an outreach effort geared toward Muslims and college students has not been going well. A similar outreach effort for local people in another city had to stop because the local religious bureau came there to check on the group. Please pray for the security matters.

A missionary’s first-person story
“My students have become my teachers,” says IMB missionary Tommy Larner, who helped form missions training centers in Peru, often located deep in the jungle.

WorldView: Little resolutions, big results
New Year’s resolutions can be unrealistic, even counterproductive. New beginnings are fine, but real progress doesn’t always run on a calendar. Daily growth in Christ usually happens quietly, with thousands of “little moments” coming to us day by day. Do we choose to speak up for Christ when the opportunity arises? Do we choose to pray for the lost?

“In the day of my trouble I will call upon You, for You will answer me.” (Psalm 85:7)

Please pray today for Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis of Latvia (eastern Europe, between Estonia and Lithuania).

BIHARI MUSLIMS OF BANGLADESH (bee-HAR-ree) - The Bihari tutorial center, started in a Bihari Muslim home nearly a decade ago, is now the Light of Faith Center. Why Light of Faith? One Bangladeshi Christian woman started tutoring Bihari Muslim children with a mustard seed of faith, totally depending on the Lord to use her small offering for His glory. She taught the poor Bihari children to pray in faith for healing and for physical needs, and their faith grew each time they saw God answer their prayers. Day by day, these children and the center staff live by faith, trusting the Lord to provide and multiply their loaves and fishes. Bihari children who now are secret believers have faith that their parents will one day trust in Isa (Jesus) as Savior. Those laboring for years among the Bihari Muslims have faith that mighty God has both the ability and the desire to transform the Bihari community through His Word. The goal is that a multitude of Bihari Muslims will be sanctified by faith in Isa. Jesus said to Saul on the road to Damascus, “. . . open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me” (Acts 26:18). Please pray that Bihari Muslim children and parents alike who come to the Light of Faith Center will step out in faith and trust Isa for salvation from their sins.

LUSAKA, ZAMBIA (loo-SAH-kah) - Last September, the urban missionaries of Sub-Saharan Africa came together to develop strategies for reaching the burgeoning cities of Africa. It was an extraordinary time. In this age of hyper-change, in order for ministry in cities like Lusaka to be effective, a “new wineskins” approach must take hold. It is a new construct of missions that moves with the diversity and the vast ebb and flow of the city, going beyond ministry with an exclusively rural view of Africa that now falls short. The emerging Africa is less and less one of great masses living isolated lives in thatched-roof huts and villages with little education, and more and more one of satellite dishes everywhere receiving images from across the world, young people imitating Western hip-hop culture, and gridlocked traffic all day. It’s movie theaters and malls identical to those in the United States, where street children emerge during the night and poverty that is becoming generational grows. It is those who have just moved to the city with their rural traditions, along with government workers, U.N. employees, and managers who are professionals in suits, often with equal or greater education than the missionary. Seventy percent of the population is under 30 years old, forming an energized mass with their eyes on living life just like they see it in the West. As we enter a new year, pray for our missionaries to have wisdom and the execution of biblical outreach to win Lusaka for Christ in this new, 21st century Africa.
