“I pray that the perception of your mind may be enlightened so you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the glorious riches of His inheritance among the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of His power to us who believe.” (Ephesians 1:18-19a)

WORLD LEADERS - “Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence” (1 Timothy 2:1-2). Please pray today for Prime Minister Thongsing Thammavong of Laos (southeastern Asia, between Thailand and Vietnam).

SUB-SAHARAN AFRICAN PEOPLES - The evil one is striking hard in 2014, but God is causing His Word to spread despite attempts to crush it! Villages are turning to the Lord. A few days ago, a chief and his wife were confronted by a group, and when they confessed to accepting Jesus, she was shot in the stomach and he was dragged away. Later his dead body was found; he’d been brutally beaten. Our missionaries were devastated, as this is what they are asking people to be willing to do for our Master’s sake. His wife called from the hospital and said, “I will not give up my faith, and if you start a Bible study, I want to be the first one to attend.” She also requested that he have a Christian funeral. Security had to be called in because of the volatile situation. A believer shared a bold Gospel witness at the funeral, and 15 men accepted Jesus! Ten of them were guards sent to keep the peace; the other five were from another tribe. This was the first Christian funeral in this area. The wife of the deceased sent a letter to the funeral, saying that she had forgiven the men who did this and that she would not stop following Jesus. Praise God that what the devil meant for harm, God turned out for good! Pray that all of these men will grow in their faith and be just like the chief: willing to stand strong in face of death.

ABIDJAN, COTE D’IVOIRE (ab-i-JAHN) - “Church plants look very different all over the world, and we have many different kinds of ‘baby churches’ here too,” writes the Abidjan Urban Team. “In one of our neighborhoods, an older woman offered the vacant spot across from her little 10 X 20-foot house to use for a church. The space is similar in size to her own house, and the young believers quickly threw up some bamboo poles and black plastic sheeting as a shelter, in whatever minor way, from the sun and the rain. A church in the United States is partnering with this brand-new church, which has been meeting for five months, to help them reach their neighborhood. On January 24-31, the U.S. team will be back for a second trip to help this church go door to door, speaking with people in the neighborhood about the love of Christ. Pray that they will find those who are ready to turn to Jesus as Savior and that through their efforts, this small church will be strengthened and encouraged.”

SHAWIYA BERBERS OF NORTHERN AFRICA AND EUROPE (sha-WEE-yah BER-bers) - The tiny schoolhouse was several miles away, but Sanai* enjoyed learning and looked forward to going to school each day. She was excited about getting an education to become a doctor. Then at age 15, she was pulled out of school and given in marriage to a man much older than she was. She could no longer go to school, since she had to care for her husband and home. Soon after that, she had her first child, and then three more followed. Sanai recounts the regret and emptiness she feels at not having an education or pursuing her dreams. Some Shawiya girls are promised in marriage at a very young age or even before they are born. Pray that they will be allowed to finish school and live fulfilled lives. Ask the Father to restore the years that the locusts have eaten from the lives of those who identify with Sanai (Joel 2:25).
