A NOTE FROM THE PRAYER OFFICE: International Mission Board will be closed on Monday, January 20, due to the Martin Luther King Day holiday, so “Today’s Prayer” will not be available on that day. Thank you.

"For the LORD hears the poor.” (Psalm 69:33a)

WORLD LEADERS - “Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence” (1 Timothy 2:1-2). Please pray today for Prime Minister Jabir Al-Mubarakof Kuwait (Middle East, between Iraq and Saudi Arabia).

DEAF PEOPLES - “Two groups of visiting believers traveled to Bangladesh to reach the Deaf. They prayed, looked for Deaf people, and prepared a video to mobilize Deaf churches, individuals and communities to pray for the Deaf of Bangladesh. We are hoping that it will be made available to all Deaf churches and ministries so they will prayerfully consider interceding and partnering with us and the Deaf of Bangladesh. Prayer is foundational. Please join us in asking that churches will pray, wait on the Lord, ask the Lord of the harvest to send out more Deaf workers into His harvest . . . pray, embrace, go as the Master calls and leads.”

SUB-SAHARAN AFRICAN PEOPLES - One study says that 774 million people aged 15 and older are non-literate. Three countries from the Central Sahel Cluster (Burkina Faso, Niger and Benin) are included on a list of 10 countries with the worst literacy rates. Missionaries rely on oral strategies to reach these nonreaders, such as evangelistic radio programs and audio recordings of the “JESUS” film. Another strategy involves putting the African mother-tongue languages into Arabic script, since many learn to read and write Arabic as children from Quranic teachers. This is called “Ajami script.” Since the Arabic script is seen as holy, beautiful and a blessing to read, there is a high motivation to read materials in the Ajami script. Some missionaries are learning and distributing the Word written in African languages using the Ajami script. What a joy it is to see the face of the reader light up when he or she reads the Word in their own language for the first time! Please pray for this tool to be effective in reaching the lost of the Central Sahel Cluster. Pray for hearts of good soil to receive the seeds of the Word.
