“Be harmonious, sympathetic, brotherly, kindhearted, and humble in spirit; not returning evil for evil or insult for insult, but giving a blessing instead; for you were called for the very purpose that you might inherit a blessing.” (1 Peter 3:8b-9, NASB)

Hi, this is Eleanor Witcher of IMB’s prayer office, asking you to pray for marriages.

Broken family units are seen everywhere among Arab peoples who make the United Kingdom home. Most often the men are absent, working long hours or out with their friends, chewing “qat” (a narcotic leaf). Some choose to find love with a person other than their legal wife. Islam allows a man three wives, and some men marry another woman for so-called “love” using the Sharia system, which is not recognized by the British government. This understandably leaves the first wife, frequently from an arranged marriage, in utter heartbreak. On average, these first families have three or more children, who are caught up in this storm. The wife feels humiliated, as culturally the shame is on her for not being able to “keep” her husband, although he most often is either breaking his marital vows or living an unclean life according to his professed faith’s standards. Many of the wives feel deeply resentful. Ask the Holy Spirit to give believers wisdom, teaching them how to be supportive yet still speak truth into these families’ lives.

“Tips for a Better Marriage” is the title of a workshop being offered by Op Weg Faith Community in Ghent, Belgium as both a ministry to its members and an outreach to its surrounding neighborhoods. A volunteer team from a partnering church in the United States will come is now in Belgium to work with this young church. In two weeks, the church will show the film “Fireproof” as a follow-up activity.

* Please pray for the church in Belgium that their community neighbors will see the love the believers have for each other and desire to know more.

* Intercede for Arab families in the United Kingdom that they will encounter God’s truth.

* Ask God to bless the marriages in your own congregation with purity and faithfulness.
