The Mandinka of West Africa are busy sunup to sundown planting and harvesting crops (mostly rice). Workers pray for rain each year so that their neighbors will have the food necessary for survival for the coming year. However, chiefs often ask believers to wait until after the rainy season to visit. They don’t want their people to be “distracted”--listening to Bible stories when they could be out working! August rains are vital for millet, the staple crop of the Western Niger Fulani. The stored grain from last year’s crop is mostly used up, if not gone. Many families are getting by with one meal a day so they can stretch what little grain they have until the harvest in September. L, a worker among the Samogho people of Mali, loves the rainy season when everything is green and fresh looking. It has started to rain in her area. As she drove home from the capital city recently, she saw crops just beginning to come out of the ground. Everyone has started planting now, so if the rains do not continue, the food they have planted will all be lost. So far, the rain has not arrived in the Casamance region of Senegal where the Jola-Fonyi people live. Everything is dry, hot and dirty, and the people are beginning to worry about not having enough rain to plant crops and have a harvest. * Please pray that sufficient rains will come for the needs of the Jola-Fonyi, Samogho, Western Niger Fulani and Mandinka people. * Ask God to place believers in each field who will be bold to share the Word of Truth. * Pray that the seed of the Gospel will grow in the hearts of these people groups of Africa. |
