“For You light my lamp; The Lord my God illumines my darkness.” (Psalm 18:28, NASB)

Hi, this is Eleanor Witcher of IMB’s prayer office, asking you to pray for the Rif Berbers of Northern Africa and Europe.

Dris* and several friends sat down at the little table outside an overcrowded cafe. When their hot coffee and bread had been brought to the table, he calmly stated, “Now we will pray and thank Jesus for the blessing of this food.” His guests turned to each other and laughed as they began to eat. Dris, normally calm and reserved, took the food from their hands and placed it back on the table. “No. We will pray and thank Jesus for this food.” In stunned silence, the young men sat and watched this new believer take a stand for his faith. On a busy street corner in the middle of the city, like a candle shining its light in the darkest of rooms, Dris lifted his hands and his voice in thankfulness and praise.

The Rif Berber people are native to the area surrounding the Rif Mountains and the northern coast of Morocco. The Berber people converted to Islam in the late 7th century; however, they kept their distinct customs and language, which resulted in a mix of traditional folk beliefs with Islam. Many Rif Berbers, especially the women, have never read the Quran, Islam’s religious book, since they must learn to read classical Arabic in order to be able to understand it. Instead, they follow the oral traditions of Islam that have been passed down to them for generations.

Tarifit, their heart language, is an oral language that has been unwritten for many centuries. For the first time in history, the Bible is being made available in their language, both through audio recordings and written materials using Arabic script.

* Please pray for other Rif Berber believers to be as bold as Dris has been.

* Pray that God will open the eyes and ears of the 98 percent of the population who do not follow Jesus.

* Spend time today allowing God to shine His light into areas of darkness in your life.
