Almost all Egyptians love the trappings of Christmas. Carols are played in public places, and Santa Claus decorations can be seen all year long. Orthodox Christians celebrate the holiday by fasting from all meat products except for fish, which they are able to eat from November 25 until Christmas Day. You must be thinking this PrayerLine text is a mistake. It should have been shared two weeks ago. In Egypt and other places where orthodoxy is prominent, Christmas is based on the Gregorian calendar and is celebrated this year on January 7. On January 6, many will go to a special prayer service that lasts until midnight, and then go home to break their fast with a Christmas feast. Children from 2-and-a-half to 20 years old attend a party at church on Christmas morning, where they are given toys and candy. After the party, family members visit each other, and older members of the family give the younger members money gifts. People go out to eat at restaurants on Christmas night. The Muslims in Egypt do not celebrate Christmas, but many purchase and display Christmas trees and other decorations. Those serving in the European peoples affinity group can see that God has been at work throughout 2014: Prayers have been answered, people have come to faith, new groups have been started, and churches have been planted. Praise the Lord for what He has done! * Please pray that workers will see even more fruit among Europeans in 2015 and that God’s kingdom will continue to be advanced. * Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the Truth to Muslims in Egypt, who accept the virgin birth of Jesus to Mariam (Mary) but reject His position as the Son of God. * Rejoice in this new year and the potential it represents in reaching the nations for the glory of the Savior Jesus Christ. |
