You will have suffering in this world. Be courageous! I have conquered the world.” (John 16:33, HCSB) Hi, this is Eleanor Witcher of IMB’s prayer office, asking you to pray for those facing various levels of persecution. A believer in East Asia wrote, “The SWAN area, in which we reside, is one of the most beautiful parts of all of God’s creation! The environment, the weather, the food and the people are all amazing. But it is an incredibly dark part of His harvest field. Tens of millions live here, and most do not believe in--do not know--our Lord. Recently a small gathering met after dark in an apartment in a quiet neighborhood. They gathered, at their own risk, to sing praises to the King of kings in their heart language.” Oftentimes Somali minorities of the Horn of Africa are persecuted more for their association with believers than for having faith in Jesus. When persecution comes before any in the community have accept Christ, believers typically lose access to the people. Somali minority peoples are known for their ability to spread news quickly through a powerful network of family and friends. An Azeri brother in Christ recently told about how intense the persecution from his neighbors had become. He even told about being attacked with a knife. He was so discouraged that he was ready to discontinue the house church meeting in his home. You can imagine our delight when the next time workers spoke with him, he joyfully told about recently baptizing eight new believers in his village! * Please pray that this Azeri pastor and his church will ‘take heart’ in knowing that although they will have trouble in this world, Jesus has overcome the world. * Ask God to protect the friends of Somali believers from being persecuted before they have a chance to place their faith in Jesus. * Intercede for God to raise up local believers to shine His light in the darkness of the SWAN area of East Asia. ***The prayer office will be closed Monday, January 19, in honor of MLKing Day. The next PrayerLine will be distributed on Wednesday, January 21.*** |
