Thank you, Southern Baptists: Lottie Moon offering hits $154 million Southern Baptists gave a record $154 million to the 2013 Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for International Missions, the largest total in the offering’s 125-year history. This is good news for more than 4,800 IMB missionaries worldwide who depend on the offering to fund their efforts to spread the Gospel. IMB President Tom Elliff said, “… Those who give sacrificially and out of concern for the lost can be assured that an enormous portion of all that happens overseas can be directly tied to their support.” Getting the ball rolling in Brazil During a May 26–June 2 mission trip to Brazil, Oklahoma Baptist University women’s soccer team kicked off Baptist outreach efforts surrounding the upcoming FIFA World Cup™. See how OBU players scored victories on and off the field in and around Natal, one of the 12 host cities for the World Cup, June 12–July 13 in Brazil. New hunger campaign launching in Baltimore More than 1 billion people around the world are hungry more often than not, and about 24,000 die every day from hunger-related illnesses. Global Hunger Relief (formerly World Hunger Fund) seeks to take the unique “dollar in, dollar out” message to new and wider audiences and challenge a new generation of believers to personally take Jesus’ love to starving souls, in both word and deed. The Global Hunger Relief campaign will be supported by a new website, GlobalHungerRelief.com. If you are attending the annual SBC meeting, visit the GHR booth and learn how you can help Syrian refugees as violence and turmoil in Syria continues to escalate. Using GHR funds, IMB and Baptist Global Response are providing food parcels and hygiene kits to families in need. Rebuilding in Chile Parts of Valparaíso, Chile, looked like a war zone after a deadly fire in April. See how Baptists are helping survivors and how you can get involved. Village-based training meets whole-life needs Ma Mima (name changed) was once an extremely shy woman. Now she leads human needs projects in her village, thanks in large part to leadership and literacy training funded primarily by Southern Baptist gifts to Global Hunger Relief (formerly World Hunger Fund). You can donate to ministries such as this. First person: Missionary couple finds God at work in Abidjan IMB writer Elaine Gaston shares her experience with the McAfees, who were called to Abidjan to serve as urban church planters. Their ultimate hope is to plant a church in every neighborhood — a God-sized task. As they work toward this end, it’s just possible that these city streets that saw so much bloodshed will instead know God’s forgiveness, reconciliation and grace. God is in Abidjan, opening doors for their efforts to speak truth to many who live in fear of curses and darkness. Prayer sustains believers in Venezuela Despite political unrest, escalating violence and economic disparity in Venezuela over the past few months, IMB missionaries and Venezuelan believers are working hard to spread the love of Christ. Learn how you and your church can pray for them – and for the troubled country of Venezuela. “One thing that encourages me is that in no other time in history has so much praying been done for Venezuela,” said an IMB missionary there. CommissionStories tabloid, Summer 2014 Learn what it means to be a part of “one sacred effort” and how the prayers and efforts of many have led to an awakening in Cuba, or, as IMB President Tom Elliff puts it, “a fresh wind of God’s spirit blowing across the Caribbean.” Also read about Syria’s children – a lost generation? – and a church where members truly live “sent.” An issue packed with people finding their place in God’s story.
