“As for the prophet who prophesies peace—only when the word of the prophet comes true will the prophet be recognized as one the Lord has truly sent.” (Jeremiah 28:9, HCSB)

Hi, this is Eleanor Witcher of IMB’s prayer office, joining you in prayer for Syria and her people.

Syrian Sunni Arabs are no strangers to war. For centuries, Syria has been fought over and conquered by countless empires and regimes. But the Syria of yesterday, where Paul met Jesus on the road to Damascus, is not the same as the 90 percent Islamic Syria of today. Following Islam is an important facet of daily life for the 17 million Sunni Syrians. They are known for their simple, family-centered way of life and their love of hospitality, visiting with family and neighbors while sitting on padded mats, drinking tea. But their simple lives have been shattered by the civil war ongoing since the “Arab Spring” of 2011, dividing Syria into multiple factions. The fighting and destruction has been brutal, wrecking cities and destroying lives.

Muna* and her six children waited for months for her husband to return after his disappearance. Not knowing if he was dead or imprisoned, she and the children finally had to flee on foot from the fighting around their village, walking for three days in the cold of winter until they made it across the border to safety. Followers of Jesus brought them mattresses, blankets, clothes, food and a Bible. Now they are learning to have Bible studies, reading God’s Word aloud, and praying in Jesus’ name for their father to return to them and for their needs to be met.

* Please pray for Muna’s family, and the thousands just like them, to accept the truth of the Gospel message and to know true hope in Jesus.

* Ask God to provide for the physical needs of Syrian refugees for shelter, food, jobs and education.

* Pray also that God will give courage to those who stay in Syria and follow God’s call to heal and share with those who don’t yet know Him.

"Ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete.” (John 16:24b)

WORLD LEADER - Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence” (1 Timothy 2:1-2). Please pray today for President Mahinda Rajapaksa of Sri Lanka (island off southeastern coast of India).

HIJAZI SAUDI ARABS OF SAUDI ARABIA (hi-JAH-zee) - Saudi Arabia has passed a new terrorism law that will treat non-believers in Islam as enemies of the state. According to Yahoo News Networks online, this includes “atheist thought in any form, or calling into question the fundamentals of the Islamic religion on which this country is based.” This has serious ramifications for those professing or considering the claims of Jesus, as they can now be tried and convicted of terrorism, and Saudi Arabia’s laws on terrorism are very tough. Pray for those who want to follow Jesus but are afraid to do so.

SUB-SAHARAN AFRICAN UNENGAGED PEOPLES - “The evangelical pastor, thrilled to have Christian visitors, welcomed us with unusual warmth. His ministry in western Benin, right on the border with Togo, was difficult. He had counted more than 100 mosques in the town in which he lived. ‘And this does not include all the prayer locations under the trees,’ he said. We asked him specifically about the 24,000 Muslim Foodo people in his region. He shared, ‘They are difficult to reach. They will show up at my house after dark to ask for prayer, but they won’t turn to Christ. One crazy man, though, would hang around the church. I prayed over him, God delivered him, and he gave his life to Christ. Now he comes to church.’ Pray that thousands more Foodo people will have ‘God encounters’ and surrender to Christ. Ask God to place a great burden on the hearts of people to engage the Foodo people with the Gospel!”

"I waited patiently for the Lord, and He turned to me and heard my cry for help.” (Psalm 40:1)

WORLD LEADER - Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence” (1 Timothy 2:1-2). Please pray today for King Juan Carlos of Spain (southwestern Europe).

RURAL PEOPLE OF EAST ASIA - During summer English camps, the Gospel is presented to middle and high school students during culture studies. Please pray that hearts will be open to the truth. Many participants in these camps come from unreached people groups. Pray that many will believe and be bold in sharing the truth with their people.

RUSSIA - “Sochi and the Winter Games is by far one of the most prayed-for events in which I have ever participated,” WMU International Initiatives Team Leader Andrea Mullins told an IMB colleague. Understandably, there was a lot of negative press prior to the Games, but despite the negativism, God’s people rallied together in prayer. Being a faithful heavenly Father, He heard and answered those prayers. He gave the 220 Southern Baptist volunteers and local Baptists opportunities to participate in massive seed sowing. Approximately 17,000 pins that included a Gospel message were given out all across the Sochi region during the Winter Games. More than 350 individuals provided contact information, allowing opportunities for follow-up, and five prayed to receive Christ as their Lord and Savior. Seventy percent of the contacts were from Sochi, and many of these contacts expressed an interest in strengthening their English skills. Please pray for an English camp to be made available, and ask that these Gospel seeds will grow to fruition. Praise the Lord for all that He did before and during the Games in Sochi and for what He is doing after the Games. Pray for the new “Check out the Bible” Group, and ask for more individuals to choose to follow Christ through outreach endeavors in Sochi and across Russia. Pray for the couple serving there to experience an afterglow, with receptive hearts residing in that region.

On eve of Ukraine election, Baptist seminary sends out grads
Graduation is a “life issue” that followers of Christ face around the world, but this story peers into the additional challenges added by the political upheaval in Ukraine. Pray for wisdom for these recent graduates, with degrees in church planting, Christian education, counseling, youth ministry and pastoral ministry, to know how to continue in the middle of this crisis.

Editor’s note: Stay tuned for more glimpses into these “slices of life” behind the Ukrainian crisis in a series of stories coming soon on Eurasia Stories.

WorldView: New Americans
Has any land ever been such a powerful magnet to people yearning for freedom and opportunity as America? Some believe our society is being fragmented by the constant inflow of outsiders, and that E pluribus unum, “out of many, one,” is becoming “out of many, chaos.” New Americans bring new energy, creativity and productivity to our culture. The more important question: What are God’s purposes in this historic movement of people from everywhere to a single nation?

Living in obedience to God comes at a cost
The leadership of Sojourn Community Church in Louisville, Kentucky, challenges and encourages their members to “live sent.” “Everything great in life calls for sacrifice,” says Daniel Montgomery, lead pastor, “... and we resolve to sacrifice for the mission of God, really for the joy that’s set before us.”

Watch a video, see photos and learn more about Sojoun church.

Faithful in tough places
Many places in Southeast Asia are hard to reach for a reason. Christians often face threats and violence when they try to share the Gospel with the people God calls them to. Though it would be easy to give into fear, Southeast Asian Christians can't ignore God's call to share the story of Jesus with their Muslim neighbors. They choose obedience over fear, and God blesses their efforts.

New missionaries say yes to God's invitation
IMB trustees appointed 59 new international missionaries May 14, at First Baptist Church of Spartanburg, South Carolina. The new workers come from a dizzying variety of personal and professional backgrounds. What unites them all? A desire to obey Jesus Christ and a deep burden for peoples across the world searching for Him.

Elliff urges new paths for sending, supporting missionaries
Speaking to trustees May 13-14 in Spartanburg, South Carolina, IMB President Tom Elliff warned that IMB “must come to grips” with the unsustainable demand placed on the organization’s resources from years of declining giving. “… IMB’s only answer has been to encourage Southern Baptists to increase their giving. [It’s been] the same message – only louder – again and again,” Elliff said. The issue isn’t about money, he told trustees, but about the billions who don’t know Jesus.

Fervent prayer fuels church-planting movement in Cuba
During the last 20 years, God has answered the fervent prayers of Cuban Baptists. He has poured out His Spirit across their island nation until there are no longer enough churches to hold all the believers. In fact, Cuba is seeing one of the most rapid rates of church growth in the world.

IMB worker in Prague sees flickers of hope for exploited women
Brandy is an IMB worker who is part of a prayer group that regularly reaches out to women exploited by the sex industry in Prague, Czech Republic. Women involved in this lifestyle have layers of pain and sin and abuse. It was hard at first for Brandy to realize she couldn’t rescue them – that there were no quick fixes in the red-light district. Includes video.

Unrest in Thailand: Leaders urge prayer for peace
The Royal Thai Army declared martial law May 20 and gained control of the government in a coup just two days later. “We pray for a resolution that is best for the Thai people,” an IMB worker says.

“These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33, NKJV)

Hi, this is Eleanor Witcher of IMB’s prayer office, praying with you for those facing persecution.

Frank* is a young man of Southern Tunisia who read the Word and turned to the Lord in faith and repentance. When he shared his new faith with his family, they disowned him and kicked him out of their house, leaving him homeless. The Lord has been sustaining Frank and giving him peace in very difficult circumstances. He was baptized in the sea in obedience to the Word, and as he emerged from the chilly blue water, Frank exclaimed, “I am new!” He continues to share with friends and whoever else will listen, and has given his copy of the Word away several times. Praise the Father for working in this young man’s life!

In the midst of darkness, the Lord was there. A recent attack on a group of Pashtun believers in Central Asia was a very real and tangible reminder that God is truly the Protector. In the midst of evil and violence, not a single person for whom the attack was intended was harmed. It is easy to become discouraged when violence and hatred seems to be such a constant presence, but God has already overcome all evil.

There is a growing group of young radical activists in Sub-Saharan Africa. Recent reports tell of evangelists being beaten for their belief in Christ alone, of churches being knocked down, and most recently of a church being attacked by radicals, with several church members losing their lives.

* Please pray for national believers and personnel, asking that God will encourage them in the work that He has called them to do.

* Give praise to the Lord that so many in Central Asia escaped such a terrible attack unharmed.

* Ask that Frank and other believers experiencing persecution will be rooted and built up in their faith through fiery trials.
