Syrian Sunni Arabs are no strangers to war. For centuries, Syria has been fought over and conquered by countless empires and regimes. But the Syria of yesterday, where Paul met Jesus on the road to Damascus, is not the same as the 90 percent Islamic Syria of today. Following Islam is an important facet of daily life for the 17 million Sunni Syrians. They are known for their simple, family-centered way of life and their love of hospitality, visiting with family and neighbors while sitting on padded mats, drinking tea. But their simple lives have been shattered by the civil war ongoing since the “Arab Spring” of 2011, dividing Syria into multiple factions. The fighting and destruction has been brutal, wrecking cities and destroying lives. Muna* and her six children waited for months for her husband to return after his disappearance. Not knowing if he was dead or imprisoned, she and the children finally had to flee on foot from the fighting around their village, walking for three days in the cold of winter until they made it across the border to safety. Followers of Jesus brought them mattresses, blankets, clothes, food and a Bible. Now they are learning to have Bible studies, reading God’s Word aloud, and praying in Jesus’ name for their father to return to them and for their needs to be met. * Please pray for Muna’s family, and the thousands just like them, to accept the truth of the Gospel message and to know true hope in Jesus. * Ask God to provide for the physical needs of Syrian refugees for shelter, food, jobs and education. * Pray also that God will give courage to those who stay in Syria and follow God’s call to heal and share with those who don’t yet know Him.
