“Father of the fatherless and protector of widows is God in his holy habitation.” (Psalm 68:5, ESV)

Hi, this is Eleanor Witcher of IMB’s prayer office, asking you to pray for children.

Relationships have been built in new areas among the Wassulu of Mali, Guinea and Cote d’Ivoire through a mosquito net distribution project. Nets are given to families with young children who are the most vulnerable to the mosquito-borne illness, malaria. If the children do not grow and thrive, will they ever have a chance to hear the Gospel?

The boy is 12 years old. He lives with his mother, grandmother, aunts, siblings and cousins. His father lives in the same Tswana village in South Africa, but the boy does not see him much. The women who run his house do their best to keep everyone fed and clothed. They even take him to church on Sunday. But the idea of a Father in heaven is quite strange to him. How will he know what it means to be a godly man? How will he know how to treat a woman? How will he know what a child needs from his father? As he enters the teenage years, he will become increasingly exposed to pornography, sex, alcohol and drugs. He will see church as a place for only women and children to go. He will enter adulthood never having had a role model for being a man after God’s own heart. If--or when--he contracts AIDs, he will most likely die before he reaches age 40. This is the story of thousands of young men in South Africa.

* Please pray for a mighty moving of God’s Spirit among men in South Africa, especially for Christian men to mentor those growing up without an active father figure.

* Intercede for the Wassulu villages of “Tennille” and “Butler,” whose residents will be the next recipients of the mosquito nets, praying that their ears will be open to the Good News of salvation.

* Ask God to reveal ways your congregation can mentor the spiritually fatherless children of your community.
