“The Lord is good, a stronghold in a day of distress; He cares for those who take refuge in Him.” (Nahum 1:7, HCSB)

Hi, this is Eleanor Witcher of IMB’s prayer office, joining you in prayer for those facing persecution.

A pastor from Senegal shared that a national believer and his wife moved to a Bainounko village to begin a church. Their names are Andy and Bea Anderson*. They started with approximately 15 people who came to worship. Those 15 were soon forbidden to return. The pastor said, “The Bainounko are very much against the Gospel. The Bainounko can call themselves Muslim or Catholic, but they can never ever be evangelical Christian. They are a very mystical people.”

Nearly a year ago, believers in East Africa rejoiced when an Islamic teacher, Isaac*, decided to follow Jesus and burned all of his teaching materials. News of his decision must have spread rapidly along the coast, because it was not long before chief leaders from the city arrived to try to persuade him to change his mind. Their initial efforts were unsuccessful, so they whisked him away instead. There were rumors that houses, gifts, and educational opportunities had been offered in exchange for renouncing Jesus. These believers had no contact with him for more than eight months and continued to pray, all the while growing more and more concerned. Recently they heard amazing news. Isaac is alive and well and is living in the city. But rather than returning to Islam, he is now holding Bible studies and is even planting a church. He reports that since reading the Word for himself, he is certain that it is the truth and he will not turn back.

* Please pray for Isaac, asking that his church will grow in number and that his testimony of faith will penetrate many hearts.

* Continue to pray for the Bainounko who want to follow Jesus, and pray for Andy and Bea as they share the Gospel with them.

* Give thanks for the goodness and tender care of the Lord.
