"At daybreak, LORD, You hear my voice; at daybreak I plead my case to You and watch expectantly.” (Psalm 5:3, HCSB)

WORLD LEADER - “Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence” (1 Timothy 2:1-2). Please pray today for President Alassane Dramane Ouattara of Cote d’Ivoire (western Africa, between Ghana and Liberia.

NYUNGWE OF MOZAMBIQUE (NYUN-gway) - It’s an area named after the color of the tarps that once provided temporary shelter for people who had resettled there after the flooding of another area of Tete city. Eventually the flood waters went down. Some people moved back to the place from which they had been evacuated, while others stayed. Bairro Azul, is it is still called, is now a heavily populated area on the north side of the Zambezi River in Tete, Mozambique. Please pray for a church to be planted in Bairro Azul. Some believers who recently went and shared in this area said that they didn’t meet anyone who expressed a desire to respond to the Gospel or even to hear more from God’s Word. Ask God to give people eyes to see and ears to hear the Truth. Pray for believers living in this area to be salt and light and to be prepared at all times to share Christ’s love with their neighbors.

TUAREG OF THE SAHARA DESERT (TWAR-eg) - Abdulaye* can be found on the side of the road under a tree, next to a small table where he sells everyday items like tea, sugar, matches and candy to his neighbors. He sees everyone who drives or walks by and knows all of his neighbors by name. He often takes a break from his table and has a round of tea with his friends who stop by. A believing family stopped by one morning, so Abdulaye made tea and they all talked next to his table on the side of the road. As they talked, Abdulaye heard about Jesus and His sacrifice for our sins. Abdulaye thought the stories were good, but he did not believe in Jesus. Please pray that Abdulaye will believe and share Jesus with every person who passes by his small table on the side of the road. (*name changed)

“Like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation.” (1 Peter 2:2, NASB)

Hi, this is Eleanor Witcher of IMB’s prayer office, asking you to pray for new believers.

Mr. Tamboli and Mr. Shaikh both came to Christ during the past two years. Their last names happen to be the names of two major Muslim people groups in the Deccan of India. They also have something else in common: Their extended families do not appear to be interested in Christ.

Bayram* is a Mediterranean Turkish man who is reading the Word and growing every day. He is excited about his new faith, but is encountering a few obstacles that are keeping him from fully committing.

Five Chinese women in Western Europe committed their lives to Jesus Christ and were baptized. Miss Wu*, standing beside one of our workers as they watched the baptism, remarked that the process of sharing the Good News, hearing their confession of faith in Christ, and then witnessing their baptism was like assisting in their spiritual birth.

Ora* came to know Jesus through the witness of a nurse when she was in the hospital in Thailand. Knowing that she might be facing death made Ora want to know more about the God of love. Now she loves sharing Jesus with people she meets wherever she is. She has faced persecution and rejection from her family and neighbors, but these difficulties just make her trust God even more. She sees how God provides for her even in the littlest ways and praises Him for His blessings.

* Please pray that Ora, these five Chinese women, and Bayram will continue to grow in faith and that they will continue to share their faith broadly.

* Pray for Mr. Tamboli and Mr. Shaikh that they will not settle for anything less than faithfully abiding in Christ and obeying what they come to learn and understand of their Savior.

* Give praise to the Lord for the 15 new believers in Taiwan, 11 in Mongolia, 9 in Madagascar, and 200 among the Songhai of West Africa.

September 29, 2014

“Give ear to my words, O LORD, consider my meditation. Give heed to the voice of my cry, my King and my God, for to You I will pray.” (Psalm 5:1-2, NKJV)

WORLD LEADER - “Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence” (1 Timothy 2:1-2). Please pray today for President Luis Guillermo Solis Rivera of Costa Rica (Central America).

LAST FRONTIER - Over the past four months, workers have trained several people to share Truth using Bible stories. They have met with them regularly to encourage them and allow them to practice what they have learned. Now, as the training is coming to an end, they ask you to pray for the trainees as they begin reaching out to their family, friends and co-workers to start new, reproducible groups among the population segment of a Last Frontier people group living in their city. Pray that God’s light that they carry within them will light up the darkness around them and lead them to others who are waiting to hear and receive His Truth (2 Corinthians 4:5-6).

QIZILBASH-AFSHARI OF AFGHANISTAN (KIH-zil-bahsh ahf-shah-REE) - Day by day, the Lord is granting His children access to the Qizilbash-Afshari people. They live with veiled eyes, in constant fear not only of the physical present, but more importantly, of death. Ask a Qizilbash-Afshari, and he will tell you that his fear lies in the fact that he knows not if he will be granted access to heaven or if he will be sent to hell after death. They also have a wrong concept of sin, believing that humanity is good and can indeed work their way to perfection, thus gaining access to life. Pray that they will see their true state of sinfulness and understand that they are helpless to change on their own, and thus discover their need for a Savior. They first must see their need before the Truth can be understood.

“There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.” (1 John 4:18, ESV)

Hi, this is Eleanor Witcher of IMB’s prayer office, asking you to pray for people groups that are bound by fear.

Irodo (pronounced e-roo-doo), Madagascar, is an Antankarana village without a church anywhere near and a people who, until just recently, knew little to nothing about Jesus. The people practice ancestor worship and “tromba.” To these people, their ancestors possess a person’s body, give great power, then speak through the possessed individual. “Tromba” is a form of demonic activity. Missionaries Michael and Michelle Allen are entering into intense spiritual warfare as they begin teaching and sharing an evangelistic Bible story set.

The Anuak (pronounced AH-noo) people of South Sudan live along two Rivers, where they herd sheep and goats and grow small gardens. They live in clans within villages, which are self-sufficient and isolated from other villages. The Anuak people are animistic. They pray to the spirit Juok for the sick or to get revenge. They also practice divination and magic, putting curses on one another. There is certainly a spirit of fear among the Anuak.

The worldview of the Ar people of Colombia says that their rituals and spiritual practices are what maintain order in the universe. If they become Christians and cease to practice their traditional rituals and belief systems, they will be excommunicated from the community or forced to return to their traditional practices to live in their village. A local Baptist church has asked for training in cross-cultural ministry and chronological Bible storying strategies to reach the Ar people.

* Please pray as a team is formed with this Colombian church and the national missionary teams, asking God to break down spiritual strongholds and fear among the Ar.

* Pray for this unengaged, unreached people group of South Sudan—the Anuak—to discover and live in the perfect love of Jesus.

* Intercede for a great harvest of souls among the Antankarana people and for a church to be planted in the village of Irodo.

"Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 28:19a, HCSB)

WORLD LEADER - “Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence” (1 Timothy 2:1-2). Please pray today for Prime Minister Henry Puna of Cook Islands (South Pacific Ocean, about one-half way from Hawaii to New Zealand).

DAKAR, SENEGAL (dah-KAR) - She is a grandmother and sells millet at the entrance to the military camp. Sallie* was Muslim and also had a demon for six years. She sought help from numerous “marabouts” (religious leaders), but to no avail. When someone told her that maybe people at the evangelical church could help, she went to them. They prayed for Sallie; the demon left, and Sallie gave her life to Jesus. Then Sallie’s husband abandoned her, and almost everyone she knew turned against her. But her faith is strong. Sallie can’t read, so she listens to Bible stories on a solar-powered audio player. She is thrilled at all she is learning. Pray for Sallie, asking that God will use her to reach others for Jesus. Pray for her family and friends, asking that they will come to know what Sallie knows and, like her, follow Jesus. (*name changed)

NU OF COLOMBIA (noo) - In June, national missionaries John* and Lia* traveled with their family to the Nu villages far from where they live. They were disappointed to discover that there was no one in the village of C, where they had hoped to spend the next month. They decided to go on to the second village, K, to spend time with the new believers there. While in the village of K, they reviewed the Gospel stories and two young men made decisions for Christ. Lia and John began to share the stories from the Book of Acts, and the Nu people were very excited to begin to learn about the lives of the new believers and the church in Acts. Praise God that believers in this village are sharing the Gospel stories with Nu people in other villages! Pray as a strategy is built upon the desire of this group to share God’s story with others. “Know that the LORD has set apart the faithful for Himself; the LORD will hear when I call to Him.” (Psalm 4:3, HCSV)

WORLD LEADER - “Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence” (1 Timothy 2:1-2). Please pray today for President Denis Sassou-Nguesso of Republic of the Congo (western Africa, north of Angola).

BEDOUIN OF NORTHERN AFRICA (BEH-doo-in) - In June, you were asked to pray for Mr. Button*, who was experiencing pain that doctors confirmed was not due to a physical ailment. Mr. Button acknowledged, “The real problem is inside me.” Give thanks to God that this Bedouin man is continuing to frequent the home of some believers. Each time he brings at least one friend with him. Recently he and a repeat friend joined the believers for dinner. After the meal, they began asking more and more questions about Jesus, sin, the prophets, and eternal life. Both Mr. Button and his friend were engaged in the conversation and were eagerly seeking to know more. The believers later visited his home and met Mrs. Button. While she did not ask many questions, she did listen intently as her sisters-in-law, who were present, asked many of those same questions. Please continue to lift up this household. They are searching for the One who can heal body, mind and spirit. (*name changed)
deserttribes@gmail.com

PEOPLE OF FACTORY BELT, CHINA - Sometimes those who are laboring for the harvest are called to a new field--a field with very few, if any, other believers. The work is hard even when they have their believing friends around them, and when they are called to a new field, it can become even harder. You can imagine the toll that such a move takes on a family, on a marriage, or on a single person. Not too long ago, a believing couple was reunited with some of their old friends who are going through difficulties. They were saddened to hear of their friends’ struggles but were reminded of the importance of prayer. Please join them in lifting up their friends as they settle down to work in a new field--a field with very few other believers. Ask the Lord of the harvest to provide others to work alongside them, and to protect their marriage and family. Pray that their children will develop meaningful relationships.

“Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.” (Ephesians 5:33, NKJV)

Hi, this is Eleanor Witcher of IMB’s prayer office, asking you to pray for purity in marriages.

Maiya’s* husband used to be known as a womanizer. At one point, he even wanted to get a second wife, but that was before God got a hold of his life. Now he is a pastor among the Ngonde people in northern Malawi. Maiya never gave up on her husband, and now encourages others to live godly lives as an example to their husbands who may not be saved. The Ngonde men are famous for having many wives. Maiya and her husband, Richard*, are seeking to be a strong example of what God desires for a couple and family and to resist the schemes that the devil will surely send their way.

Polygamy is found in many African cultures. For the Yawo, it seemingly is a type of “life insurance.” The more wives a man has, the more family members he has to tend his increasing number of maize fields. The more maize he grows, the more wealth he is able to acquire. As he ages, there are more family members to tend to his needs. There seems to be no sense of wrongness, even though the wives generally are not happy with this type of arrangement. Polygamy is deeply engrained in the Yawo culture, and it is very difficult for new believers to come out of this way of life. They find it difficult to see polygamy as sin. They do not equate it with adultery. The Yawo Team asks: “Would you please pray with us for the new-believer community, especially, to know how to address this issue of polygamy in their homes?”

* Please pray that Yawo Christians will come to understand and obey God’s plan for faithfulness and purity in their marriages.

* Ask God to help Maiya and Richard remain steadfast in their faith as they seek to witness and disciple the Ngonde people in their area.

* Intercede for the marriages in your own congregation that they will remain pure and faithful in their relationships.

*names changed

"Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have relieved me in my distress; have mercy on me, and hear my prayer.” (Psalm 4:1, NKJV)

WORLD LEADER - “Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence” (1 Timothy 2:1-2). Please pray today for President Joseph Kabila of Democratic Republic of the Congo (central Africa, northeast of Angola).

BASOTHO OF LESOTHO AND SOUTH AFRICA (BAH-soo-too) - “At a mobile medical clinic held in the remote mountain village of Ha Maphike,” writes a Basotho Team member, “I met a young mother whose teenage son had large growths behind each ear. The young man was terribly embarrassed by the growths and wore a hat pulled down over his ears all the time. The mother said that he was continually teased by the other children at school. In February of this year, a medical team from a church in Virginia came to Lesotho. This is the second year that this church has joined us to do medical missions. Arrangements were made to see the doctors, and the mother met us at our home one evening after we had spent a full day at a village medical clinic. The volunteer doctors removed the growths from the boy’s ears in a simple procedure on our dining room table. Fast forward to July 2014: This boy’s mother commits her life to Christ! Praise God for Southern Baptist church partners who are using their passions and gifts to reach the mountain Basotho for Christ! Sometimes the little things open the door to the Gospel!”

RUSSIAN-SPEAKING PEOPLE OF UFA, RUSSIA (oo-FAH) - Team Ufa asks: “Please pray for preparations that are being made for a Celebrate Recovery training team that will be coming to Ufa in mid-October. Pray for smooth processing of their visa applications, for effective promotion of the training here in Ufa, and for local believers to be involved in the training.”

September 23, 2014

"I cry aloud to the LORD, and He answers me from His holy mountain.” (Psalm 3:4, HCSB)

WORLD LEADER - “Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence” (1 Timothy 2:1-2). Please pray today for President Ikililou Dhoinine of Comoros (Indian Ocean islands, between Mozambique and Madagascar).

AZERIS OF AZERBAIJAN AND GEORGIA (ah-ZER-ees) - Having people on the ground to live out their lives as an incarnational witness for Christ is an indispensable part of getting the message to the Azeris. Often it takes a lot of creativity and hard work to find a viable way in which to enter and remain in a country. Pray that God will reveal His plans and points of access for those whom He is calling to share the Good News with the Azeri people.
http://centralasianpeoples.imb.org/
centralasianpeople@gmail.com

EAST ASIAN UNENGAGED PEOPLES - The Eastern Luoluopo (or Southeastern Luoluopo) are considered to be part of the Yi minority by the Chinese government, but their language sets them apart. These approximately 47,500 people are thought to be one of the most unevangelized people groups in the world. They live in central Yunnan province, China, often on the steep mountainsides where the farming is most difficult. The Eastern Luoluopo are very superstitious and blend ancestor worship and animism. The oldest male family member is responsible for maintaining the family spirit altar and all the rituals that this entails. The Eastern Luoluopo often offer sacrifices, burn incense, and wear small amulets to keep the evil spirits away. There is no known written or audio form of any Gospel message in their language. In April 2014, two believers from another people group went to share the Good News among this precious yet lost people. Currently there are no reports of Eastern Luolupo believers. Please pray that nearby believers will be burdened for the Eastern Luoluopo and take the Good News of Jesus to them. Pray that the bondage of ancestor worship and animism will be broken and that the Eastern Luoluopo will come to know the rich blessings of Jesus and all that He has for them. Please pray that the seeds sown by the two believers will take root and spread to many Eastern Luoluopo people who will make a decision to believe and receive Jesus’ salvation.
