For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.” (1 John 4:18, ESV) Hi, this is Eleanor Witcher of IMB’s prayer office, asking you to pray for people groups that are bound by fear. Irodo (pronounced e-roo-doo), Madagascar, is an Antankarana village without a church anywhere near and a people who, until just recently, knew little to nothing about Jesus. The people practice ancestor worship and “tromba.” To these people, their ancestors possess a person’s body, give great power, then speak through the possessed individual. “Tromba” is a form of demonic activity. Missionaries Michael and Michelle Allen are entering into intense spiritual warfare as they begin teaching and sharing an evangelistic Bible story set. The Anuak (pronounced AH-noo) people of South Sudan live along two Rivers, where they herd sheep and goats and grow small gardens. They live in clans within villages, which are self-sufficient and isolated from other villages. The Anuak people are animistic. They pray to the spirit Juok for the sick or to get revenge. They also practice divination and magic, putting curses on one another. There is certainly a spirit of fear among the Anuak. The worldview of the Ar people of Colombia says that their rituals and spiritual practices are what maintain order in the universe. If they become Christians and cease to practice their traditional rituals and belief systems, they will be excommunicated from the community or forced to return to their traditional practices to live in their village. A local Baptist church has asked for training in cross-cultural ministry and chronological Bible storying strategies to reach the Ar people. * Please pray as a team is formed with this Colombian church and the national missionary teams, asking God to break down spiritual strongholds and fear among the Ar. * Pray for this unengaged, unreached people group of South Sudan—the Anuak—to discover and live in the perfect love of Jesus. * Intercede for a great harvest of souls among the Antankarana people and for a church to be planted in the village of Irodo. |
