For the gate is wide and the road is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who go through it.” (Matthew 7:13, HCSB) Hi, this is Eleanor Witcher of IMB’s prayer office, praying with those who confuse their beliefs through syncretism. “Why is following Jesus so hard? Why does following Jesus mean leaving everything I have ever trusted and trusting in Him alone?” West African Muslims, for example, tend to keep much of their ancestral beliefs and merge them with Islam. They may hear a truth about Jesus and add it to what they already believe without seeing it as a contradiction to the teachings of Muhammad. The end result is often a very wide road with no boundaries. “I’ve met some other Christians, and we had a great time studying the Bible together. But they showed me many verses in the Bible I had not read before that say that to believe in the Trinity is wrong. I’m confused.” When Danh* shared this with believers in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, it just brought heartache. To see someone confused, discouraged, or led astray by those teaching false doctrine is truly saddening. Nama* asks for prayer at the conclusion of a Bible study. She is afraid to sleep because she sees pictures of demons on the walls of her home. Another believer explains that spiritual attacks are common in Egypt. For instance, during the time of welcoming a newborn baby, women beat a special metal bowl and sing loudly to ward off evil spirits that threaten the baby. Christians and Muslims alike ascribe to these practices. * Please pray for women like Nama, who undergo spiritual attacks to hear and trust the Truth of the Gospel. * Intercede for believers in Vietnam that they will be like the believers of Berea in Acts 17:11, daily examining the Scripture to verify that what they hear from others is true. * Pray for West African Christians struggling to stay on the narrow road, standing firm in their faith and knowing that “the Jesus Way” is worth following whole heartedly. *name changed
