As of this writing, five West African countries have had documented cases of this epidemic, and over 3,000 people have died. A large number of Maninka live in one of those countries. Strict guidelines have been issued in regard to handling the sick and dying, but in a culture where death and burial have consequences for the living if not done properly, those guidelines don’t mean much. As a result, people have been caring for their sick and continuing their burial rituals in secret (washing of the body by older family members, wrapping the body in special cloth, etc.), for fear that loved ones will be taken away and not be buried in a way that has been done for centuries. Just four days after the news that the dreaded Ebola virus had infected the country where a worker among the Mandinka people lives, she walked into the kitchen to find her house helper doubled over, with sweat beaded on her brow, complaining of severe stomach pains. The worker sent her helper home to rest and frantically began bleaching anything she might have touched. The worker said, “My head told me that it was most likely malaria or one of the common stomach ailments in our area, but my heart looked at my four beautiful children and cried out in panic. The Bible tells us to cast all our anxiety on God. We cannot be effective if we are living in a state of fear and panic. We also cannot be effective if we are too ill to minister.” * Please pray for believing families living in West Africa to follow God’s wisdom and direction as they minister to their communities. * Intercede for the Maninka and Mandinka peoples who are bound by traditions and rituals that they will listen to health care workers to stop the spread of the virus. * Pray that West Africans cast their cares upon the Lord and surrender their spiritual and physical health to Him. |
